I had 2 kids go to W&M, last one graduating this year. Both had multiple Bs, and one had a C. Both tested well and did full IB.

1. Why 7 credits in 9th and 11th, but 9 credits as a sophomore?

Honest truth - W&M Class of 2025. Central Virginia resident. Mixed race (White / Asian). Good but not spectacular extracurriculars. Parents went to Ivies.
There's something not being told here.
ED + showing interest is probably the difference. My DD had a similar A/B mix although more Bs in 11th and submitted good test scores. Showed a lot of interest including interview but wasn't all in enough to ED. Based on our school's Naviance she'd have been accepted ED but even going regular she was waitlisted so could have started in Spring if she wanted to.
It's the Central VA residency too I think--geographic diversity. But it's still below the 25th percentile.
Someone has to be below the 25th percentile. In fact, a quarter of the class is below the 25th percentile.
Sure, but it's well below the 25th percentile--esp since only about 20% go test optional and usually have very high grades. So there is likely to be some other hook.

That didn’t sound right so I went and checked. UVA is need-blond for in-state students. William & Mary is need-aware

I was missing the PP's point because they said W&M's results were disappointing because they use FAFSA, but I thought that would be the same scenario for financial aid most schools.
