You admit of course your observations are based on little data...and at the HS one town over for some reason "lots" of kids are turning down Duke.
BTW, schools accept more kids then they have slots based on expected yield. It is unusual to ever go deep into the waitlist at a Top 10 school, even in what one could consider a low-yield year.
