It's not so much uninformed as it is biases and insecurities especially on the part of the NW cheerleaders. All 3 are great schools offering superb educational experience and each has its good and bad. They are in very different locations with different vibes so fit is the most important. Instead the cheerleaders, especially the ones from NW, post subjective comments like better +1000, better by a country mile, etc. that belie their own biases.

Not bizarre. Northwestern has always been a stronger school than the other two, people are simply repeating what they know and hear

Reading through threads like these reminds me of how uninformed and/or uneducated people on DCUM can be.

OP, it would be a rare student who chooses WUSTL over either Vanderbilt or Northwestern. Between Vandy and NU the edge goes to Northwestern, particularly for the fields you listed.

That said, there are nebulous tertiary factors to consider, such as “fit”, weather, and the ability to see oneself thrive in an environment for four years.

For the record, I am unaffiliated with all three schools, though I have close friends who attended Vanderbilt.

What's really "bizarre" is the number of Northwestern promoters (or maybe it's the same few people posting over and over again) talking about how prestigious Northwestern is and bashing the other schools. Insecure much? I guess its understandable given that their neighboring college (UChicago) overshadows them esp in economics.

Northwestern allows any student to change schools (except for Bienen School of Music as auditions are required) if they want. Easy to triple major at Northwestern.

OP: Three outstanding choices. While Northwestern is the most prestigious, all 3 are highly respected and can get you where you want to go in the real world.

Students love all three schools, so visit each school and go with the one where you feel most comfortable.

Northwestern does have the best economics dept. among the three schools, but it is also probably the most competitive.

If I had to rate the choices: 1) Northwestern 2) is a tie between Vanderbilt & WUSTL.


Actually, it IS correct. While Northwestern may have some flexibility, Wustl is well known for is flexibility to the point where it is easy to transfer from say a history major to an engineering or comp sci major which is typically very difficult to do and for those majors you often have to apply directly to those schools


DP. This is completely doable at Northwestern too, and all majors you just listed are bound to be stronger at Northwestern to boot.

This is so funny to me as someone who has lived in Chicago. The North Shore (made up of like 6-7 suburbs, one of which is Evanston) is one of the richest areas in the entire country. Saw more old money there than Potomac!

Not PP, but the north shore is some of the wealthiest places in Chicago area: Glencoe, Winnetka, Highland Park, Wilmette to name a few. Have you ever been to Evanston and driven north? Try that, but let someone else do the driving so you can view the area.

Northwestern has by far the strongest econ program — it's one of the best in the world (and a stronger CS program by a not-insignificant margin).

It's also more prestigious by a fair amount than either of the other two schools (especially WashU).

Great problem to have, OP. My kid was rejected from both Vandy and NU so I am jealous! Having three solid choices is a wonderful problem to have. These are great schools so it is like splitting hairs and arguing over decimal points. I agree - visit all three and pick the one your kid feels he will be most motivated it. A motivated, thriving kid is what you want. Try to talk to kids who are taking both at each school and ask about their experiences too.
