If you lift heavy, as you claim, you should be going to a powerlifting gym that has many squat racks. I'm certainly willing to drive 20 minutes to go to a gym like that rather than drive 5 minutes to the lame-o Big Chain Gyms near my house.

What an odd assumption to make. What does liking powerlifting have to do with willingness to drive 20 minutes each way to the gym? I lift heavy and I go to a gym that has one power rack that two people can use at once. This gym is a 5 minute walk from my home. I am not going to spend an extra half hour or more every day driving to the gym if I don't need to. Plus I live in DC, and so the legit powerlifting gyms are either a pain to park at in the city or a farther drive than 20 minutes in the 'burbs.

FWIW not all non-powerlifting gyms are chain gyms. My gym is not a chain gym, and is usually not too busy, but occasionally both sides of the rack will be taken when I want to use it.

If I see someone hogging the rack to do things they don't need a rack for I will go up to them and ask them if I can use the rack. Often times they will move! And they even might look embarassed as they do it! It is satisfying.

There is a dude at my gym who I have nicknamed Deadlift In The Squat Rack. This particular guy has not moved when I have asked if I can use the rack because it's not easy to move a barbell with deadlift-sized weights on it. I get that but you did not have to choose to start your deadlifts in the gd rack!

It's truly not an issue if you grow a set and tell the gym hogs you're working in and sharing the equipment. I budget an hour and am done in 45mins.

Again, try 'working in' when the difference between you and the person you are trying to 'work in' with may be 200 lbs of weight and 8 inches in difference in height. We aren't talking about fake garbage smith machine workouts. You'd have to unpack 2-4 45 lbs plates, take off and adjust the j arms, and then adjust the safety arms/bar catches between every.single.set. It's just not feasible,.and when you are focused on lifting heavier to break through a plateau, you may need more recovery time than the person you're trying to work in with is used to.

How about just not doing arm curls, shoulder presses, and deadlifts in or around the power rack for starters? Learn basic gym etiquette and be aware of the space around you. Oh, there's only one rack that can be used to do squats? Maybe I shouldn't dead lift in front of it and do arm curls. Common damn sense.

Ok, yes, she shouldn't have been doing those exercises in or around the power rack. Congrats. You're right. Now, do you want to focus on the glow of Being the Rightest Right Person, or do you want to figure out what to do next time so you can get your damn squats in?

Wait, someone was working out *near* the power rack, and OP didn't say anything?

Oh, OP, that's pretty sad.
