Subject: MD Student Needs Safety Options
Towson, SUNY-Purchase, Indiana might be very difficult to get dance classes - these are some of the top dance programs in the country
I think Muhlenberg is a really good suggestion. Or any of the schools in the Amherst five-college program
We are looking at dance programs, and I have a friend up in PA that took her daughter to look at Ursinus - they really liked it. Might be another one to add.
What about Elon? ECU? UNC-Charlotte (program with Charlotte Ballet)? West Chester U (in PA, program with Brandywine Ballet)? JMU (this wound up being in my top two in the 90s with high stats)? Illinois (UIUC)?
I don't know if any of these would appeal, but my kiddo has Shenandoah (VA), Meredith (NC) and Alma (MI) on her list of possibilities.

I don’t understand this thinking even as a very liberal pro-choice woman. If my son goes there and his girlfriend gets pregnant he can help her pay to get to a state that can help her, if that is her choice. Many kids who have enough money from this area to move to OH for college have enough money to avoid the legal BS that exists there now. Thus us an equity issue as well as legal. For instance, if my daughter goes to Kenyon I’ll buy her a box of plan B and have her keep it in her dorm since they will not have it at the local cvs. Obviously the laws are disgusting in my opinion but why should an affluent kid from dmv avoid the whole slew of college options there if they have the means to avoid their impact personally, and then they can help vote those idiots out of office while they are there.
+1 Maryland recently expanded abortion access so it's easy to arrange for a child to come back here for an abortion if desired. I also think it's short-sided to trash the entire state because of what some legislators did. By teh same reasoning, you should have trashed the US and moved to another country when Trump was elected.
It amazes me that people in this day and age don’t know that pregnancies can turn dangerous very quickly and a woman can easily find herself in a crisis and too sick to travel.
DP- your statement is true and if I was looking to start a family, I would absolutely factor this in to where we chose to live. But it’s likely less relevant to a college student where abortion access is more about terminating an unwanted pregnancy. If the college student does end up with a pregnancy they want to carry to term, they’d probably be looking to move back home anyway, no?
Di y get me wrong, I think what is happening is appalling, but I also wouldn’t discount entire states for college based on this.
DP.. to me, I don't want to give money to a state (for public u) that takes away women's rights.
Also, no one thinks they will need an abortion until they do. And as a PP stated, sometimes it can be an emergency. A college girl can stay in college until towards the last trimester. In any case, it's about the state and its people electing and passing laws that restricts women's rights. Yes, there are people there who are against anti-abortion laws. But, the majority seem to be fine with this arcane law, "fine" meaning they'd rather have low taxes and conservative values than give women their ability to control their own reproductive system.
The ultimate irony would be if a woman went to a red state like this and majored in Women's Studies.

She should look at some women's SLACs also. My DD didn't think she wanted that but then we toured some that she liked.

If you're looking at SUNYs, I'd look beyond Purchase. I'm from NY and the SUNY system in general is great but that's not one I would have immediately thought of for a high achieving student soley because they have dance classes...

OP here. Didn’t see the thread had picked up again. So many great suggestions—exactly what we needed to round out the list. She and I continue to research but Muhlenberg and U New Hampshire have both been added to the list. I told her that so many of her choices are tiny so we need to cast a wide net. She knows not to get her heart set on any place. Last I checked St. Mary’s College of MD had zero dance classes so we ruled it out. All their dance pages on the website are broken. The catalog shows nothing. That was always on our list but we took it off.

+1 Scratching my head why the focus on college selection is on abortion rather than academics. Every student at a college is going to be impacted by the academics at a college. Only a few will have sex that results in pregnancy and consider abortion.

Exactly. The inability to envision how abortion restriction in a state can potentially affect a lot of us is shocking. Everything has to go right to line up out of state travel if needed and there’s a lot that can go wrong quickly. Hence why we need to codify Roe on the federal level.

I have a similar student and they will probably apply to St. Mary's and maybe UMBC as safety. UMD may not be a safety but I think it's a pretty likely admission
