It’s ridiculous to deny high achieving kids because for a hot second they wanted to major in engineering but if given the choice to be admitted under a generalized major they might have chosen that. VT was my daughter’s first choice and she would have never applied engineering had she known they were going to deny her. She had a 4.5 gpa! Yet her first Gen boyfriend got in with a 3.7! Grrrr

Whatever.
They are making a concerted effort to increase the number of URM students. If you are Caucasian applying for a popular major, you’ll have a high hurdle.

Isn’t it possible to be denied in one major but accepted into another?
Five years ago my nephew was rejected from engineering but admitted to the school itself.
Five years is a lifetime in college admissions. You used to be able to list a 2nd choice major and could be considered for that. They dropped that option a few years ago. You have to pick one major and it's that or nothing. They do have undecided major options but those have pretty low admit rates for VT.

Do we just remain on the list until May 1 and then commit elsewhere?
Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:I’m sorry to break the news but waitlist typically means denied. It’s their gentle way of letting you down easy. They didn’t take off the waitlist in 2021 at all and with the way admissions are again this year I imagine so many kids will accept their spot at VT and they won’t use the waitlist. Waitlist means choose another college and move on. We’ve had experience with this and VT
Yes they did. DD got off the wait list and is now a Sophomore. Granted it was close to the May deadline but she got off the wait list. Also not the most in demand major-Human Nutrition Foods and Exercise Major. But it is possible.

Accepted. Didn't get email. Just had portal open to check at 5:00 pm.
Thanks.
