For those of us who work a desk job - we have to take time out to make steps.

I have no idea how many strides or steps I take, but i know that if I walk at 4.5 mph on an incline of 10 for 5 miles, I get a good fat burning workout, a good sweat, and I can basically eat whatever I want and feel reasonably fit. I'm not going to beat myself up if I'm only walking 9253 steps because my legs are not the right length.

Agree, but for some people, random steps here and there are all they get, and it's better than being totally sedentary.

But all steps are not created equal. Running 6000 steps will be better and more effective than walking 10,000. Or Doing 3,000 steps of stairs are better than 6,000 of walking. Quality >>> quantity.

10k steps is arbitrary. (Like diamond rings for engagements, it was a marketing ploy to sell stupid consumers on stuff they don't need: pedometers.) Just move and walk as much as possible.

I live in the city. I don't have to try. I walk the kids to school, I walk to work, I walk to do errands, I go on walks in nature here. Most days I'm over 10k without trying.

You get your steps much easier wearing a Fitbit versus using your phone.

My son used to get “steps” during car rides.

I only use my phone to track walks/runs—otherwise it’s not on me. I still aim for 10,000 steps but it’s challenging. I have to take two 5,000 step walks…or I have to go for a run. It’s much easier when the days are longer.

But there’s no rule that you have to get 10k steps. I believe studies found that 7k is plenty. You are doing other exercise as well.

I get 15k most days. On running days, I get 9-12k on the run and the rest from walking to/from metro/work. On non-run days, I get 6k at the gym, 5-6k walking to/from metro/work and the rest on a walk at lunch.

You cannot exercise away a bad diet or hormonal issues.
