Your kids don't have friends over? Your neighbors don't drop cookies at Christmas? You don't donate food for the Boy Scouts?
You are a hermit.

One evening not too long ago there was a knock at my door. It was pitch black out—my porch light wasn’t yet illuminated and I had just gotten home—and my immediate reaction was to quickly open the door because surely it had to be an emergency! I blindly opened the door and was greeted by a man selling CDs. He had a permit and everything! (I later found out on the neighborhood page that he is a legit handicapped man who makes his living this way, and is legally permitted.)
But how stupidly foolish and complacent of me! It would have taken him two seconds in the pitch black to shove me into my house if it had been someone with more nefarious intent.
Okay, but he didn't shove you into your house or have nefarious intent. So what dreadful recent experience are you referring to? I feel like this lends credence to the argument that most people who knock at your door, including strangers, are not there to harm you.
