You should read the article before shooting off your mouth. It answers the question why the drug training was necessary.
This comes after at least three students had to be treated with Narcan or needed medical attention in the past two months. One of those students overdosed during school hours at Blair in Silver Spring, overdosed after snorting fentanyl laced with Percocet.
You will be surprised to find how many schools are dealing with these situations. It is not just a Blair thing. Either you are very naive or just full of Blair envy. Parent of recent Blair grad here (& have kid at another MCPS school).
My kid never felt unsafe at Blair. Great principal, program administrator and staff. For the most part, really nice students, especially the general Blair population. Biggest downside was the hyper competitiveness of some "mag bro" students and occasional cliquey-ness or the N Beth/Potomac contingent. Also, 1 teacher (Rose) who was not good (& biased against female students in general). Overall, a fantastic program with phenomenal teachers, great peer group and excellent admin.

I'm not doubting that Blair is a more heteorgenous school than whatever you are zoned to, but the actual experience of a SMCS kid can be pretty rarified if they want it to be.

Getting used to the rigor of the magnet is challenge. APUSH is a reading intense class that has its own challenges. Hon US History worked well with the difficult history classes. If your child loves history I’d save it for a later year.
Why are they advising this? DC loves history and is a strong writer. What specifically will be so hard that a magnet 9th grader is advised against taking it? Is it their schedule, workload, etc.??

My kid was in PHS SMCS. It was a wonderful and amazing experience in all ways for him.
Academically, socially, emotionally he thrived. It was not a pressure cooker at all for him. In the school, there are hardly any discipline problems. Mostly all the kids are nerdy. My kid was in the magnet track so he already knew most of the kids from his ES days and over the years we had worked hard to connect with the families too. I think this made a big difference because socially it did not feel like a special magnet program but a normal HS experience.
It is too far away from civilization so it is very quite. There is very little to attract the bad elements there. My kid was surrounded by best friends. It is not a glamourous or happening place. The commute was scenic, peaceful and bucolic. So driving back and forth was not an issue.

None of these posts is making anyone, least of all the posters, look great. There are very large suburban on the edge of urban schools. Occasional terrible behavior is expected and nothing that says a schools themselves are terrible. Many of us made a choice to not have our kid attend a whitewashed private school so they could see more of the real world in a still very safe environment.

So true. Liberal elite only talk about public schools. Send their kids to private. Blair SMAC is full of people who are derogatively called strivers by the liberals. Jokes and politics aside - it can be a really tough place for a kid who doesn't enough math and a super competitive environment.
