But since it did happen in VA, unlike in DC, this guy is going away forever.

What are you talking about? It happened at the Potomac Avenue Metro stop at 14th and Pennsylvania Ave. SE. One stop from Eastern Market and two stops away from Capitol South which is where you get off to go to the US Capitol building.

I apologize. I was wrong. I thought this was near Potomac Ave in Alexandria.

In this case, it wouldn’t surprise me if this guy will be on the street tomorrow.

DC makes it both difficult to own a gun legally, AND gun crimes are regularly pled down to nothing. Does anyone else see a contradiction? We also do NOTHING in this city to address mental illness. So sorry for the family of the dead and injured.

DC needs to fix this. Any time someone in DC commits a crime with a gun, or even threatens to, not just shooting, but brandishing, threatening, or for that matter even just shoplifting with a gun tucked in your waistband, there should be an automatic mandatory minimum sentence. No plea - unless it leads to the arrest and conviction of whoever sold or gave them the gun and even then only a partial reduction of sentence.

Never heard of Charles Allen before today but he’s not a person to blame here. Blame lax gun laws (a uniquely American issue) and lack of mental health services.

I’d never heard of him either. I’m a lifelong dem and long term dc resident. I find his language in the clip troubling. Why does he refer to the murdered WMATA employee as “loss of life” as if it’s a passive thing, like a misplaced wallet? It would make more sense to put equal attention on the systemic mental health failure and the systemic security failure (and the person) who shot and injured people and shot and killed the wmata employee. Why is it not ok to say this?

I didn’t find his language to be passive, uncaring or disrespectful. Just my opinion. I’m the poster you responded to.

Agree. The reality here is the shooter was mentally ill, and we have a nation where guns are easy to access. Those are real problems that the whole nation needs to address. Even if we had police presence out the wazoo, there would have been victims in this case.

False. If the shooter did not have easy access to guns there would have been zero victims.

It is absolutely bonkers to just lay this at the feet of guns and blame “society”. This individual was intent on doing people harm. If he wasn’t a shooter he would have been a stabber. Absolute joke mindset.

It takes longer to stab people and requires more strength and energy. I hope you understand now.
how long does it take to shove someone onto the tracks ?

Some people belong behind bars and "kids" who are doing this stuff should be in reform school where they can get a proper education and adult supervision. Enough with this social justice garbage. What a bunch of garbage people have fallen for, just ridiculous.

I never thought this before but I think we need a federal rule — basically a protectorate with the military until we can get it together. I’m on the Left but would welcome it in a heartbeat. The last time things were good is when the National Gard was on the streets after Biden inauguration. Bowser is not doing anything. The Council is useless. Bring in the federales

The National Guard was here because of pro-Trump protesters, not random crime. They were here to protect Congress, not you. And they were only in a very very tiny isolated enclave within the city.

Are you worried about more pro-Trump protesters?

Agree. Why hasn’t shooter been identified? I’m guessing either homeless or a catch-and-release.

Isaiah Trotman, 31, of Washington, DC, was identified by investigators as the gunman, and was arrested on charges of first degree murder while armed, kidnapping while armed and assault with a dangerous weapon, police said

You've probably heard of DC's food deserts. You ever hear anyone talk of gun deserts in DC?

One time, metro police would not let me in the metro because I would not agree to a search of my bag. I had a flexible job schedule so went home and worked from there.

My point is they should be stopping people with guns—not me.

Writing 'absolute' twice and starting a paragraph with "False." don't make your statement any more valid. The number of mass shootings in the US is vastly greater than 'mass stabbings' anywhere in the world. And there are just as many angry murdurous lunatics per 100,000 population everywhere. It. IS. The. Guns.

Violent person with access to guns. If you take mental health out of the equation you will still have violent people with access to guns and the crime rate won't change. Innocent people going about their lives are still at risk.

You honestly believe that if you take mental health out of the equation the crime rate would not change? Where do you live? Where have you been for the past twenty years?

Along with the DC residents who claim to never heard of Charles Allen, this might be the dumbest statement of the year so far.

The variables are inter-correlated. “mental health” is highly influenced by rampant drug abuse (yes, marijuana), low education/ignorance and a culture of nihilism.
