Didn’t read all the pages of comments, but at the end of the day you don’t have to participate in a group that upsets you.

Not all people who need to give up their pets are bad people, and not all people who adopt pets from social media posts are using them as bait dogs for fighting rings. I recently had a close friend have to give up her dog, and some of the rescue groups she contacted made it almost as difficult as trying to adopt one of their pets, with so many hoops and conditions that it was honestly much simpler for her to post it on social media. One of the rescue groups even recommended that!!

I put small items and non-perishables that I don’t want in the breakroom at work, and it gets taken pronto. Perfumes I’ve been given but don’t like, K-cups or snacks I bought but didn’t like, etc. Bigger items like clothes, shoes, coats, toys etc go to Goodwill.

I could not imagine dealing with the hassle of a FB group to get rid of stuff I don’t want.

Couldn't agree more. Charging a fee is more than reasonable. Animals are not free. It's widely known that giving away animals for free puts them at risk of ending up in a bad situation.

Agree. My rescue LOSES $50-$2000 per animal depending on their medical needs pre-adoption. And that doesn’t include the cost to foster to feed or care for the animal until it’s ready for adoption. We make up the difference with donations.

Please get out of your bubble. Volunteer and see why rescues do what they do. Warning: you may lose faith in your fellow humans after seeing repeated cases of animal mistreatment or neglect.

Then stop calling it a rescue and be real that these rescues are selling the dogs. You aren't losing money. You are a non-profit helping animals. You aren't earning enough for your expenses and get donations to cover the rest.

If you are so into rescuing you can also be a foster parent and help people. Or, are they not as worthy?

Also, fosters LOSE MONEY. They are not reimbursed for time, food, litter, etc. I lose $2000/year fostering animals through my rescue.

And yes, I agree, I've come to despise our bn group. The same people want everything. But more than that, I hate the givers who basically say "entertain me, peasants, and should I deem your story worthy, you will be bestowed my treasures".

I like mine. I got a Crate and Barrel sectional, almost new sports bras, nice label clothes for my kids, two hardcover books, and I've been able to give a lot of things away that would otherwise be trashed: candles I ended up not liking, games, coloring books/craft stuff.

I know this is a late post but just Googled if pets are allowed on BN bc someone keeps asking for a dog in one and I thought for sure that would be not allowed. Shocked to see that BN groups do allow pets!

I find it useful for getting rid of things, but there are definitely some weirdos. There is a woman in my group who must live on Facebook and asks to be considered for every single piece of crap. It's sad and I wonder if she is a hoarder. Most annoying are the people who are picked and then never respond about picking up.

I find the group nice to have, although I have only given and never been chosen to receive.

I have had all the issues PPs have mentioned, though. To combat that, I:
- only choose people who say thanks when they indicate interest. It’s silly, but not saying thanks when someone gives you something for free is crazy! I don’t really need it in the message, but those who say it in the message seem to say it in person too. I say thanks at the store when I pay!
- when I DM with them, I ask them to pass it forward on BN if it doesn’t work for them. I know they don’t have to listen, but if that happened to me, I would feel like it was bad karma to try to sell after that. In any case, it makes me feel better and not care if they sell it.
- Give a set time by when the item needs to be picked up. It sort of helps weed out some people; on the other hand, admins get annoyed because it’s not “simmering”. The people who reschedule or don’t show are very annoying!
- Look at the person’s profile to see their activity in the group. You can see how often they participate and if they just ask for everything.

Doing all of the above makes the BN group much more enjoyable for me.
