Think about it- it’s a job where:
1) everyone hates you, except for *maybe* a small (and rapidly diminishing) percentage of conservatives/republicans
2) requires to interact with actual bad people, some of whom might try very hard to kill you.
3) requires you to possibly make life-or-death decisions with only seconds to act, with no foreknowledge of the circumstances beforehand.
4) you will be exposed to liability, loss of job, loss of finances, and possibly prison, if you make even an honest mistake, without malice (see point #3)
Why would anyone with the qualifications you desire, with many other career options available to them, do that job? It would be insanity to even consider it. Even people with genuine altruistic motives for “wanting to be the change they want to see” won’t do it, because they’re not stupid.

That’s not at all what the PP was saying, but you know that already. The PP was simply pointing out why departments are struggling to recruit officers. This isn’t difficult to understand. We want more of officers and we want them held to high standards, and understandably so. It’s acceptable to point out why some people would hesitate. To face criminal charges for a split second decision that was unfortunately necessary in the moment (especially when trying to save others), to be vilified regardless of your intentions or beliefs… people just may not be willing to sign up.

Having a college degree does not make you a good police officer. Having a temperament and skills to calmly deal with people who are giving you a lot of shit is very important.
Having a college degree makes you better able to take in a lot of information and make good decisions. It means you've been exposed to people outside your little town and ideas that different from yours. It makes you more comfortable with people who are different than you.
A lot of police departments will actually turn people away with IQs they deem too high. It makes them less pliable. But maybe we should stop arming and giving power to the power hungry idiots among us?

+1 I want police officers who are not on power trips. Police officers, CBP, and TSA officers are all the lowest of the low and need to be the best of the best.
Can you explain that last sentence? They are the lowest of the low, but they need to be the best of the best? Why would anybody want a job in which they are assumed the “lowest of the low”? How can we possibly recruit the best with that belief in place?

This! I want training that doesn't create an us vs. them dynamic, and encourages deescalation. I want cops to actually live in the neighborhoods they police. I want them to actually understand the law. So many of them are appallingly ignorant of the rights citizens have and where their power is supposed to end.
Police departments vary greatly across the country. Many in this region already have this style of training in place, and have for a while now. They regularly attend refreshers, too.

My spouse is an officer. This is the very reason I ask him regularly to quit. I’m afraid of that encounter, the one in which he has the best intentions but it goes horribly wrong in half a second. I also know what taking a life would permanently do to him, and he would have to suffer so publicly and so brutally because people would assume he’s a cold killer.
He still wants to serve, but he does admit it is harder now. He gets shouted at and mocked almost on a weekly basis for simply being in uniform.

I personally, as a family member of many police officers would like a way for a cop to report bad cops without retaliation. Good cops can report bad cops in the current system.
Do you know what "thin blue line" is? Do you know what "blue lives matters" means.
it means snitches get stiches or at least no backup.
What if victims could sue police unions for compensatory damages? Would that change the culture?
I don't think collective guilt is the answer.
Why not? Perhaps bad cops would get dismissed a lot sooner if everyone had some skin in the game.
They'd get dismissed a lot quicker if wrongful death and use-of-force lawsuits were paid out of their pension fund and not by the taxpayers.
But I agree -- "one bad apple spoils the bunch," and police have a terrible time getting rid of the bad apples. People who report wrongdoing become targets themselves. There needs to be more accountability and consequences for those bad apples. Until then, everyone ends up complicit: they're either bad, or their enabling or protecting the bad ones.

Friday night, people often stay out late because it’s the start of the weekend, the. There’s a whole weekend for protesting and possibilities. I’m hopeful that the way it’s being handled so far will let people feel heard and hopefully everyone stays safe.
The people who work at 9AM on Wednesdays are typically not the people protesting. They're the ones whose lives the protestors are trying to disrupt.
As horrific as this video is described to be, and as often as crimes like this are swept under the rug, I'm guessing it's going to enrage and motivate a lot of people to want to bring about change.
Also, why do you think protesters don't have day jobs? Would you care to explain what you mean?
Exactly what change do people want?
I want police officers with college degrees, adequate training, and the pay to match. I do not want HS drop off bullies who got kicked out of the military thinking they are God of the Universe and above reproach.
I know tons of college graduates who think they’re God of the universe and above reproach.

I think it's a shame that white cops have gotten away with atrocities in the past. It's not good that one of the first times swift, decisive action being taken against police brutality happens, it happens against black cops. But that's how it worked out this time. It's being addressed, and quickly. There's no option to go back and redo the past cases, and these guys need to have consequences for their crimes. Hopefully, as more policemen are held accountable for their actions, it will both prevent police brutality in the future and help justice be served when police commit crimes.
