I wrote my brother's medical school apps the night before they were due--mainly because he was applying on a whim and wasn't sure he really wanted to (he had taken the pre recs as part of his major and then just took the MCAT to see how he'd do). I'm a nurse and I wrote eloquently about why he wanted to be a doctor. He also got in to several schools.

You have more than one child who said they were doing applications but weren't? Why didn't you learn after the first one?

I’m surprised this student’s counselor didn’t red flag this either. Question is did this kid ask for recs, take SATs, anything?

There is something called The Space Available Survey. It comes out in May. It is a list - originally intended for school guidance counselors - that lists colleges that have space available. In May.

On College Board's Big Futures site you can search and create a list based on latest to easiest deadlines. That might offer some ideas.

Your student should finish the preciously selected apps, whether they truly do a good job or not

I actually know a student who had to be grounded to finish her apps. This was to an ivy. She got in. Deer-in-the-headlight ... t's a real thing. It affects students at all levels. Even All A Students. It does not mean they aren't ready for college (btw) They freak out. Help them.

Sure it is. A kid that can’t handle their own deadlines halfway through senior year isn’t ready for four year college. I know you’ll stomp your feet and say seniors must have help. But no, they shouldn’t.

+1 FWIW my DC got into and chose to attend (with significant merit aid) the very last school he applied to as an afterthought minutes before the deadline. I also think it was his most genuine supplemental essay because there was no time to overthink it.

She can still do this. But isn’t there a lot more to this? Recommendations and her transcript requests in and test scores sent. It’s a lot of coordination. The essays are the least of her/your problems.

My son is twice exceptional, with severe ADHD, and even though I pushed him to write his essays in August, he stayed up til the wee hours finishing an essay due Jan 1st!!!

Your child may have undiagnosed ADHD or anxiety, OP. Get her evaluated.

Apply to rolling Schools like Pitt, VCU, etc.

Two things:
1) Some of you talking about what happened 30+ years ago really don't get it. (Even if I loved the Doug Flutie reference.) It really is a whole different ball game now - infinitely more competitive. They're cute stories, but not super helpful.

2) My oldest applied last year. We were all over him for months and still his first batch of EA applications went in at about 10pm on the night they were due. It was hell. Somehow he got into a great school ED and has all As in his first semester.

So it really can all work out, even if this crazy competitive time. But lesson learned OP; your DD still requires hands-on parental oversight for big things. Help her and make sure the apps get submitted tonight, no matter what. Transcripts & everything else will get a little bit of grace at most schools since they know that's not explicitly in the hands of the students.
