That is what I did with my MIL for many years. We opened our family presents and the Santa presents. MIL arrived for brunch. She stayed until maybe 2ish and then we went to my parents house in the evening. When she got too old to drive, we began taking her out on Christmas Eve and then kept to our regular Christmas day schedule. Next year I want to go on vacation for the holiday.

I've seen this expression used a number of times on DCUM (usually in reference to either feeding like a doormat, creating boundaries or cutting off a toxic relationship/family member).

Is there something in particular that this phrase is referenced from?

You can't figure it out from context in the many posts you've seen it used in? That's how I learned it.

Wait so you are already hosting your own family this Xmas, but you don’t want your in laws to come over?

Agree breaking the cycle with a vacation will help. Or tell them you’re thinking of planning a vacation because you need a break from planning holidays and see if they volunteer.
