Wake County NC (Raleigh) schools - about the same size as MCPS - just uses local geography for naming. They use streets, creeks, etc. No more naming based on historical people.

There were petitions started by Magruder and RM students in 2020. Not sure anything came from the other schools mentioned.

Richard Montgomery didn't own the slaves. His wife's family did. I do think this name will change because he's guilty by association.
Montgomery Blair.... Sigh. I would not be surprised if this name changes because people are idiots.
They're not going to rename Montgomery Blair. I live nearby and no one in the community is pushing for that.
Here's the problem with this logic. BOE has not acted in the past based on community input with regard to selecting names for new schools. BOE picks the name they think is "best".
But there's a difference between selecting names for new schools and making the initial decision to rename an existing school. For Shannon MS, there was a lot of community support in the first place for changing the name to something other than Lee. Then the board ultimately made the choice of Shannon, which was not the top name choice of the community, but I believe people were largely glad to have Lee's name removed.

I'm also fine renaming schools that were sadly named after confederate traitors but most of these cases seem fairly silly. A lot of things from our past don't age well. These people weren't perfect. I'm not even against renaming them but am mostly against spending a lot of $$$ on this since I don't feel it matters and the school has bigger issues.
