Subject: UT Austin vs UVA?
My guess is that OP's kid is a swimmer. I would push for UVA if this were my swimmer. School is slightly smaller and swimmers at UVA will be slightly more academic that at UT, especially if this is your son vs. daughter. Charlottesville is a more manageable town than Austin, and UVA has a better academic reputation. That all being said, they are both excellent schools, so see where your kid feels more comfortable from an athletic perspective. If your kid is a sprinter, UVA is probably better. If flyer or distance free, Texas may be a better fit. If you are from this area, Texas may be a big adjustment. Good luck!

Undergrad engineering - UT Austin no doubt.
Undergrad sciences and business is probably equal - more opportunities at UT Austin but smaller classes at UVA.

UT has finished number 1 in the national directors cup (Learfield Directors Cup) the last two years for the most successful athletics program in the country. it is based on points awarded for championships and final standings.
UVA is fairly high as well. If you are recruited to either, you are a pretty good collegiate athlete.

Much of what was noted about Austin is 100% true, it isn't what it used to be. That said, I don't think that would impact your experience as an undergrad at UT.

OP, I would argue that they may be pretty equal. I graduated from Texas and loved my time there. It's a great school...but it is HUGE. If your child is not a self-starter, UT is not the place for him/her. I found it overwhelming my first year because I had spent my life in a small private school. The adjustment took a while. That said, the level of education, extracurriculars, diversity, and offerings were top notch.
Take ATX for what it's worth. When I was in school there, it was "weird". Now, it's the hype that is ATX. That can be good or bad but it is a booming metro area, very diverse, and quite expensive these days. I think anyone can find a space for them in the city. It's also hot as hades so that's something to consider.
If I lived in TX, I would send my kids to UT. However, I'm a VA resident so see no need because we have UVA. Visit both and have your kid decide. Either would be a great option.

UVA McIntire is not "much better in fact". I do dislike rankings, but UT is ranked 7 in higher rated in USNWR, vs T8 for UVA, so there is that. UT is a direct admit, which makes it better for those who really want to concentrate in business for most of 4 years vs. 2 years. This is particularly helpful in areas like accounting, if that is what you want to do.
You are wrong. In 2021, McIntire's B.S. in Commerce once again ranked as the 2nd best undergraduate business program overall in the U.S. by business education website Poets&Quants, and was ranked 1st in the U.S. by alumni satisfaction for student experience, maintaining a top three spot on the list for the fourth consecutive year.
