I would wager a guess that kids PSAT/sat scores are pretty similar to the scores of their parents, and less related to the average score of their school.

Wow the private school forum used to be the place to go to for snark and nastiness but you DCPS parents have got them beat now. Congrats. I bet your kids are super proud of you. NP but I also wouldn’t say public schools emphasize the PSAT. DCPS has an in school day where all students either take the PSAT (9th, 10th, 11th) or SAT (12th). This isn’t really to emphasize national merit scholarship, it’s literally to get kids to take the sat because they are more likely to if it’s during school and to get kids used to the standardized tests in the lower HS grades. Privates might not emphasize the psat but DCPS is aiming to just get kids to sit for the test. It’s quite apples to oranges.

Also a former nms, who went to terrible public schools in NY State. My husband is also a former nm finalist who went to very average public schools.

I also don't really think it's that related to school... Meaning I don't think you schooling necessarily prepares you for it. I think there is just some logical correlation when you see that a place like SWW having a bunch of nms -- they have smart kids there.

I have kids in two different Big3 privates and the schools do not offer a practice PSAT in 10th or 11th. My kid's friends at Walls took a practice test both years.

I'm not saying this results in different scores in 11th but there is definitely no emphasis on the PSAT at my kids' privates.
