It helps but not as much as it used to.

The fact that it’s unusual for your school might make it more likely to help. You could ask the school’s college counselor if they might mention the infrequency in their letter.

Some colleges are sponsors of the scholarships. Usually they are small (like 2k/year), but some are larger (USC’s 50%.) I would imagine the schools that contribute to the awards are more likely to boost admissions odds, but that’s just a guess.

It depends on what the breakdown is. My DC had a 1470, but only a 218 because math was perfect but only counts once and verbal counts twice. Others with a 1470 but higher verbal and lower math had a 222. So even though same raw score, one was semi finalist and one was commended. Definitely hurts the kids who are stronger in math.


I dislike that it is heavily weighted on the language score. It should be evenly weighted. (Of course, my opinion is based on my kid's strength!)


I completely agree. For some reason they have always done it this way. But there are two sections of math and two of verbal so it seems rather unfair to me.
