Covid is gone? No one has it any longer?

The time to fear it is gone. For most people after vaccination it will be like a flu.

Exactly. They're trying to avoid having an entire class out with the flu. What is complicated about that? Just wear the damn mask so we all don't have to deal with a kid home sick.

I hate to bring this term back but boy are you moving the goalposts. MCPS is not wearing masks to avoid the flu, nor should they.

No, keep up. They want to wear masks to avoid COVID which is in the classroom. COVID is much like getting the flu now. So no, they are not "afraid" nor do they think it's a dangerous disease -- they are simply trying to keep the entire class, and probably the entire school, from coming down with a bug (COVID, which is much like the flu now...) at the same time.

I'm not afraid of COVID. But I don't want to waste my time getting it (again).

MCPS has always been one of the zealots across the country for Covid overreaction. Is it hard to believe that one principal is still brainwashed by the past?

It’s not hard to believe, it’s just incredibly depressing, at least based on the OP’s initial post, i.e., masking as a result of *one* positive case.

Now that s/he’s clarified that it was three positive cases, that’s less nonsensical.

One positive case can cause an outbreak in a school.

I also see the "covid is like the flu" crowd is here as well. News flash - flu doesn't cause cumulative brain damage or lung scarring (e.g. pulmonary fibrosis).

"Compared with the control group, volunteers with a prior SARS-CoV-2 infection had an additional 0.2% to 2% gray matter loss or tissue damage on average between their 2 sets of scans. For context, adults lose about 0.2% to 0.3% of gray matter in memory-related brain regions per year"

This article is written in simple terms for the "covid is like the flu" people to understand. I know the deniers will say - oh, that guy is old, but I would remind everyone that there is no long-term data on multiple covid infections since it's only been in the U.S. since 2020. However, there is data that pulmonary fibrosis (a) does occur with covid and (b) is cumulative with re-infections.

My kids stay masked, but if the lemmings want their kids to unmask, I feel bad for them, but on the other hand this is the only way that some people learn? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ok? Masks are there for you if you want them.

Yeah, that clarification changes a lot of the conversation here with respect to following policy.

I have asked my kid if those positive kids were in the class this week, and I get no answer (still try to get to know other kids).

We have new principal this school year, so we don't know her standpoint or get to know her well. We had 2 field trips last school year, and I hope that we will have field trips this year as well.

You don't have the right to know the names of the other kids but clearly there is an outbreak in your classroom and masking is appropriate given the exposure level. So, they are following the rules and you just don't like the rules.

Because no one minds having the flu. And at multiple times a year.

Not enough to make my kids wear masks for 2 weeks.

And they take it off to eat, so it’s all theater.

There is outdoor seating option so you’re playing theatre and they masks is for 10 days drama queen.

Listen unless the kids are wearing proper KN95 respirators, fitted tight without any breaks (so those rainy days on indoor lunch or your Larlo needs to pick his nose). This variant is so contagious that cloth masks and surgical masks are pointless, and any break is basically game over.

Kn95 masks are available for purchase. You have nothing but excuses.

N95 are also easily available on Amazon and tested in the US. Level 3 surgical masks are ok too.

But, if you read real studies you need multiple layers of mitigation, not just your child masking.

Exactly. If you as a parent are worried, you can outfit your kid with a KN95, goggles, and instruction to not remove it ever while indoors, with accompanying guidance to teachers.

Your kid will be safe, at least from COVID, mental illness will be the side effect

I would ignore it. I can't imagine they're actually going to make sure every kid has had a test, and the teachers probably don't feel like playing masks police (unless they're a*holes).

You can't have it both ways - you either want schools to stay open and operational and will support that by masking when needed, or you want covid to spread like crazy and all the staff be out sick. Seems like an easy choice.

But then they all take off the masks at lunch anyway….I guess it benefits the teacher who doesn’t eat with them but come on guys.

30 minutes of lunch in a cafeteria is a lot different than 5 hours in a classroom.

Even with Alpha 15 minutes was enough to transmit- way quicker with the newer variants.
