The difference is that nurses are paid by private companies that can easily increase rates, while teachers are dependent on the government.

The nurses I know are actually very well paid.

I don't think teachers are paid enough for what we expect of them though. I taught college before and that was tough enough, with just a couple hours a day and kids that wanted to be there. I can't imagine taking on a classroom of students for 6 hours every day.

Except teachers aren’t always free to get a summer job. I spend my summers taking classes for recertification.

How many employers are willing or even able to hire someone who will only be there for 7 weeks?

people will school age kids who need childcare 🤦‍♀️

I didn't become a teacher until after I got married because I would not have been able to support myself living on a 1st year teacher salary with school loans.

Actually, or a 2nd-10th year teacher salary either. I am in year 12 and still don't make what I made my first year out of college with a business degree (though adjusted for days worked I finally hit that mark this year--my $70k salary adjusted for days worked = $89000 if I worked without summer/spring/winter break. I made $85k the day out of college 18 years ago.

They’re both historically underpaid because they’re traditionally women’s work.

In some areas, one or both are still underpaid. In others, not so much.

Supply and demand.

Teachers are underpaid because historically it was one of the few jobs women could have, so there were plenty willing to do it for peanuts just to have a career.

Teaching is still underpaid because a lot of optimistic young 20-somethings were willing to go into it and get paid peanuts.

Now those two things are changing. Either salaries are going to have to increase, or the picture of education is going to change drastically (hello 100 kids in a room with laptops, headphones, and monitors while 2 teachers and an aide circulate) because there aren't enough people willing to do the job for peanuts anymore.

This is absurd. Tell me how I can regularly vacation overseas (or own a horse) when I am only getting paid $80K after 15 years teaching. I have a family to support on that, too.

As for complaining, is it fair that I complain I’m on hour 4 of working today, on Labor Day? Only about 1/3 done for the day, too.
