My sister had her child walk home with the neighbor's 2 kids; then paid the mom $25 per day cash to watch the kid for a few hours. The whole thing was 3-6pm including the walking and it worked beautifully for years. Sister packed the after school snack in the lunch bag.

is it not possible to change your working hours? I work 6:30-3; I used to work 7-3:30. That little change helped tremendously.

I collaborated with a neighborhood mom for mornings and afternoons.

When DC was at preschool a parent needed to hire someone to pickup and drive the child home, they asked the school and the school was willing to email everyone and they actually found someone successfully. Public school won’t do that but maybe you can ask if room parent or teacher is willing to email the whole class to find someone to hire.

Swing by, BUT be there at exactly 2:42 and go straight home and take DC inside and give him a snack and maybe unload the dishwasher and run the vacuum and chop few vegetables for our dinner. Oh! And the dry cleaning is ready -- it's right on the way.

And it’s always super obvious how low the rate is “this would be a great job for a retiree!“ The best are the posters who keep asking for local “carpools“, which means “you drive my kid every day for free because you live two blocks away“.

We have had the same nanny full time since my oldest was four months old, so we just kept them on. Sure came in handy when the pandemic started and DH and I still had to work but the kids had to figure out elementary school online from home. Comes in handy when the school has random days off, when the kids are too sick for school, etc. Well worth the peace of mind to know we've got a plan when things go sideways.

I used Rubirides every day last year for our middle school kid. It went really well. We are in NOVA.

Maybe they need a walking bus? I wonder if any dog walkers would be into moonlighting? No offense to children or dog walks.

Do you not get a bus since it doesn't seem like you're in walking distance.

You either need a new childcare person (one who drives) or you need to pay both. You will be paying the driver handsomely to find someone to do the job. Getting a new sitter will be a lot easier.

We use a college student for 3 days a week of after school help and pay a flat rate each week to ensure it's worth their time.

You would basically have to make any driver’s time worth it by adding on guaranteed hours of childcare - even if you don’t need it. At that price, it would be cheaper for the person you do have available (who can’t drive) to just Uber to and from aftercare to pick up your child each day.
