This area has a lot of sexually adventurous people. Whether that’s kink, swinging, polyamory, or simply tons of 1:1 vanilla sex, you can find a party.

FWIW- Because I’m a lawyer - I didn’t say “it’s quite common” or “everybody does it” or that it’s mainstream. All I said is it’s more common than people think.

I doubt "everyone does it." But the Washington metro area has about 1 million married couples. Let's assume there are another 1/2 million couples who are not married. If 1/2 of 1% of all couples are open to swinging, that would be 15,000 couples in the DC area. That's certainly enough to include people from all walks of life and produce a lively scene. Plus with the internet it's probably not that hard to be discreet and find other couples open to swinging. A couple could easily go online, find another couple, swap and no one else would ever know.

There used to be tons of these places in DC. On any given night you could find a swinger party or kink club down on U street or the SW 1/2 area. The city used to be so fun, just gritty and edgy enough to be interesting, but not enough to be dangerous. Such fun times.

I used to think it was fun to just go and watch. I observed some wacky stuff. I often got approached by couples who wanted to play. Not for me but it was interesting to observe.

Some of it was amusing and fun to watch… cue the power lawyer getting tied to and spun on the big wheel and struck with the horse whip thingy… he seemed to be having fun… but I didn’t like watching the abusive, degrading stuff, think dog collars and leashes and verbal abuse and such… that I took no pleasure in. I’m more of a voyeur lite.

Not sure how common it is anymore to just be able to stroll in from off of the street. Now with cell cameras everywhere I imagine that these parties are probably invite only.

Also In my experience most of the patrons of these clubs, balding old lawyers excepted, were attractive. Such fun and crazy times.

It is remarkably discreet — unspoken rule taken very seriously. Funny, lots of talk about needing to be home to relieve the babysitter. It’s an interesting world of actually many very nice, smart, successful people just looking for a certain excitement and experience, not all d-bags as referenced earlier. I used to think this too, when I first discovered that some of the "normal" couples we knew were either in open marriages, or swingers, or both. But with time, I've revised this attitude.

I still don't care what people do, but it turns out that married couples who are in open marriages or are engaged in swinging as a longterm lifestyle choice, tend to consistently have the same issues. They aren't all "d-bags" but my observation is that it takes a certain level of self-absorption to do this on a long-term basis. It's not the "free love" solution people bill it as. Usually the people doing this stuff have above average needs for attention and validation from others, especially sexual partners.

Imagine the surprise a family is in for when they decorate in pineapples for the love of Dole and they end up getting surprised visitors.

Pineapples are a hospitality symbol longed used in the preppy/wasp world, not for swinging.

It’s weird how people are conflating open marriages with swinging ITT. That’s how you know it’s not actually common.

Suppose it's 2 or 3% of married couples. In a country this size, it's still a significant # of people. Unless you are 6'2" and ripped or have a porn sized schlong, stupid for a man to suggest. Even Plain Janes can find unlimited action.
