Evidently lots of people have concerns about the way that Whole Foods implements their “rigorous quality standards”.
And Whole Foods seems quick to posh the issue off on their “suppliers” instead of being open about how they can either actively assess their proclaimed and advertised standards or be upfront about what they’re selling for inflated prices.

Nearly all the corn on the market is bioengineered.

They also ruined bookstores.

Great yogurts, produce and meat (I guess).. but terrible variety of frozen food, etc. So while I’ve tried several times to try other stores..like..TJ..TJ feels like a lot of frozen and processed food… so.. Im just a reluctant WF shopper.
.

This. I'm no health nut but I could never understand the love for TJ, especially from someone like OP who is apparently complaining that her food from WF was unhealthy. How does TJ's solve that problem?

OP: Actually my complaint was that Whole Foods — a store that has billed itself as, among other things, not selling GMO foods — sold something that was genetically modified. I never used the word “unhealthy “, although healthy food is definitely a goal.

Here are Trader Joe’s standards:

“Trader Joe's brand products contain NO artificial flavors, artificial preservatives, MSG, added trans fats, dairy ingredients from rBST sources or genetically modified ingredients. Trader Joe's brand products contain colors derived only from naturally available products”

As to your question, though, Trader Joe’s has a good selection of dried fruit and nuts, nut butters, and decent cheese. They also have chocolate covered almonds that cost less than the ones that I bought at Whole Foods, and, presumably, conform to their stated standards.
While I know that they have aisles of snacks and freezers full of prepared food, it’s quite possible to bypass those aisles.

tldr: Trader Joe’s has their own version of the specific product that prompted my complaint.

Plenty of TJ frozen options are heathy. We buy the kibbeh balls. The ingredients are exactly the same as if I were to make myself: beef, onion, water, cracked bulgar wheat, salt, pepper, all spices, coriander, cumin, sunflower oil.

Obviously they have a huge selection of frozen, prepared and snack foods and I don’t know the ingredients to all. But I do look at the ingredients for all the items I purchase and I find them to be just fine.

Can you tell me more about artificial sweeteners? Im prediabetic and my parents both have/had diabetes (it’s generic). I used to have tea with no sweetener, but recently started with 1 packet of equal in my black tea with milk and it’s so much better. Like dirty dishwater to lovely tea. I dont have sweetener in my coffee and i allow myself regular desserts with sugar on occassion. I was wondering if i should stop the equal…

There are more natural sweeteners you could use such as stevia, agave nectar and Whey Low. Each one tastes different. Stevia has an aftertaste, agave nectar is good in place of honey, and Whey Low is good in drinks with fruit such as lemonade or iced tea with lemon.

Stevia and agave nectar make my feet tingle, which I'm guessing is close to a diabetic reaction of some sort. I don't have diabetes and don't get this from eating sugar or honey. These sweeteners are just no good. There is no such thing as a free lunch.

Anonymous wrote:Many years ago, I used to love shopping at Fresh Fields, and then at Whole Foods. Gradually Whole Foods has shifted from high quality food with an emphasis on organic foods, and what I was told was a supportive work environment, to something much less than that, while maintaining their high prices.

This is definitely a champagne problem, but, after I ate the last of some chocolate covered almonds, I turned the container over to get recycling information. I was shocked to see: “produced with genetic engineering “. Despite the changes, I thought that food purchased from Whole Foods could be reliably assured to have no artificial colors or flavors, and to be non-GMO. I was wrong. I’ll be label reading more carefully when I shop and relying more on Trader Joe’s, which will also be less expensive.

Oh man Fresh Fields! Blast from the past.

Can you modify mosquitoes so they cannot bite humans? Why stop at preventing disease transmission

The bioengineering label is a new law. Everything GMO, which is a lot of food, has to use it.

Totally. The quality is lousy, they are constantly out of things, and it's chaotic to shop there.

+1

I went to buy some herbs, produce and meat/fish- just felt like there wasn't a lot of variety like there used to be. No better than HT (that I'd just left disappointed). That leaves me with Wegmans for everything.

Smaller Asian and Hispanic grocery stores have good produce. Lots of other interesting things, too. HMart and Global Food etc. are also good for an amazing variety of produce. Good fish, too, but their meat is scary.
