American suits are just way too baggy to be elegant. Looks like teenager outfits or suits from the 80s to me. Been fighting DH for years so that he wears more tailored clothes (and as a thin 6ft4” he would wear skinny suits so well)


But now to add to the no list:
- short sleeves shirts, def better to wear regular shirt and roll up sleeves as needed. Such a better look. Constant fight with DH
- REI multipockets cargo pants when you are heading for brunch and not a trek in the Amazon forest
- white socks if you are not playing tennis
- long baggy shorts
- brown suits, such an ugly color


Yes, no to all Rick Steves approved travel attire - someone else mentioned but bears repeating: say no to convertible pants.

Kilt -- no man looks good in it. Why are we all lying and pretending that it is masculine? Yes, the men may be brawny and hairy and going commando, and they may have nice legs (at least those in movies) but this is a weird outfit.

Other than that, men can dress in suits of any era and they look alright. Not much is expected of them. Wear clothes that fit you, clothes that are ironed, not ripped etc. Match shoes to your belt, if you can help it. Button up your shirt appropriately. Wear appropriate clothes for the event, occasion. Don't wear chains, necklaces, lots of rings etc. Don't show your underwear.


What's not to like?


The hairy nekkid men are great, the outfit is weird. We have learned to ignore the outfit because of the nekkidness. But, it is a weird AF outfit.

I agree with much of your list, but the bold are fine, and can even be great trad style. Not to mention, loafers can be great with a suit. Maybe not penny loafers. Indeed, loafers are the shoe of choice for black tie.

As for sleeve length, they should be tailored. Shirts almost never fit properly without a little nip and tuck.

That's not true. Buy nicer shirts, and avoid the J Crew, etc. type places. Plenty of places to get nice all cotton dress shirts without button-down collars. Although I do like button-down collars with a suit, but the style has to be right. The suit should be traditional single vent with a slightly less fitted look (although not ill fitting or baggy). Basically, a button-down suit can look nice, but you need to know what you are doing.

Men are so easy. I honestly think they can wear most things, as long as the thing FITS well. Once I convinced my DH to get his shirt tailored, everyone started commenting on how skinny he looked. He used to drown in dress shirts because he has a thick neck, so needed a big size, but the arms and torso would be way too big. We got him some custom shirts, and some tailored, and the compliments started rolling in.

Huge baggy cargo shorts don't look great on anyone, a well fitting pair of khaki shorts look great.

So yeah. It's about fit.
