The primary differences are the concentration of low income kids and kids of color in the public schools and the landscaping. Being in the same county as Langley Park doesn’t make crime or violence there affect me differently or more than it affects people in Takoma Park. The vast majority of the county is quiet suburbs.
Langley Park Spills over into East Silver Spring and TP all the time, Everything from robberies, car jackings while even murder and prostitution is not rare east of Piney Branch and that isn't even mentioning the property crime. Heck the center of what most people think is the worst part of Langley Park along University up to the Chucky Cheese is actually MoCo/TP and not PG.
Also if you think Bethesda is similar to PG you most be talking about the nicest parts of PG only and comparing it to mostly North Bethesda / Rockville. There isn't anywhere comparable to Downtown Bethesda, West Bethesda or the Chevy Chase satellites like Somerset anywhere in PG. Even University Park is Silver Spring lite at best (Sligo Park Hills is a good comparable to UP)

Seriously, this is nonsense. I’ve lived in TPK, first east of Piney Branch and now west of PB, for 25 years. I’ve never experienced a car jacking or prostitution on my streets, let alone a murder. The only break-ins on my street were traced to a DC gang that targets neighborhoods all along the border, including Bethesda.
Also, nobody is looking to live near the Chucky Cheese way out on University Boulevard.

We just bought a lovely 5BR house in that neighborhood for 1.1M, barely outside the beltway.
Same but at about 900k for 4BR.

There are some really nice streets in South Arlington just on the other side of Rt 50. Like you could still walk to Clarendon or Ballston if you had a mind. I haven't looked at sales prices but I imagine they trade at a discount to comparable homes half a mile north.

I gotta say I used to be pretty judgy about landscaping and then I bought a home and we were quoted 20K just to make the yard look decent (after we had to remove a few trees and dig up some of it to deal with basement water issues), and now I completely understand. Just plants are expensive and mowing is fine but a pain. I do keep up my yard but I get why people in low income areas don’t and I don’t judge anymore.
