It’s a full ride to UVa

Full ride plus a large stipend plus plus funding for unpaid internships plus funded study abroad over your junior year summer

+1. It's a very big deal. And a big deal on campus. Everyone knows who are the Jefferson Scholars. My DS competed for it but was passed over after the regional interviews.

I’m trying to imagine this.

Why is that difficult? There are only 4,000 in a class at UVA. The Jefferson Scholars regularly meet off campus at their center and do activities together.

For someone who wants to major in economics, this is a no-brainer -- UVA, of course! I mean, you would be saving loads of money that could be invested.

I think it friends slightly on long-term plans of DC, but in most instances would say UVA. If DC wants to go to grad school, I would definitely choose UVA. I know a girl who was choosing between HYP and UVA Jefferson Scholar, went to UVA and had a fantastic experience, and as importantly was extremely well-situated for med school admissions (went to a top 3 med school). I think same would hold for MBA. Anecdotally, my DC went to an HYP and went to grad school, and would have taken the Jefferson over HYP if DC had that opportunity.

You would have to put Jefferson Scholarship on your resume for the rest of your life, and always preface your alma mater with explanation of Jefferson Scholarship.

Harvard is very generous with FA. See if you can get some aid.

People do put Jefferson scholarship on their resume for the rest of their lives, it is that prestigious.

So pretentious....and why my kid has no interest in even applying to Harvard (and some others that seem to carry this sort of vibe more often than not)

This is a major reach.

1. Assuming Harvard is going to their WL
2. That the student will then known someone turned down Harvard
3. And turned it down for the Jefferson Scholarship

C’mon

Whoosh. That was you missing the point. Good god man. It was a hypothetical designed to demonstrate a point.

I mean, I thought for a minute, I wonder if someone will start poking holes in these assumptions. And then in a flash I thought, nah, nobody is that dense. Wrong! Listen, don’t worry your pretty little head with hypotheticals. Just move along.

Bingo. When invited, walk right through that door.

A top student at ds’s school chose the Morehouse scholarship at UNC (pretty comparable to Jefferson) over Harvard last year. I think the internship and other special opportunities that come with these scholarships, plus the free ride, are not easy to turn down.

I also transitioned the other way. Started (and completed) a degree in an undergraduate business school and discovered that I preferred more traditional Economics (which were taught by liberal arts professors at the school). I worked after graduation in a business job for several years to get work experience and earn $ before returning for PhD Econ program.
