I sometimes call my dogs my fur babies, but I don't dress them up or anything it is just a term of affection. I didn't realize that this was so offensive to some people!

Mine when he could see well came up to me and we hugged everyday. He would put his paw around me and kiss me when I was reeling in sadness over the loss of our older pup. Raised him from a puppy to senior and sorry but your comment is cold and you come off like uncaring.

FYI my aunt had a pup who lived to be 22. At that age they are not just your dogs but family.

I think of my dog as my companion and friend. But I find "owner" more strange than "parent".

How do you think a pet sees the person who cares for them? I've been my dog's caregiver since she was eight weeks old. For all intents and purposes, I am her mother.

When people do this I assume they are big-hearted and have a lot of love to give. I have a cat (no dogs, though I enjoy them) and while I'd never refer to him as my child, I know one reason I became a pet owner is that I wanted to care for someone. I also have a child and obviously understand those relationships are different. But if someone doesn't have kids, I could see them channeling that nurturing and loving energy to their pets and I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

+1. Why not your pet’s wife or your pet’s lover? “My dog’s daddy” is equally creepy.

OK consider me weird then. I refer to my husband to my dog as daddy. I am mommy. It's just the two of us (empty nesters) and the dog. We can't be the only people who do that.

That said, I would never refer to my dog as my child.
