Not true at all.
It can really be worth it to raise budget a little to buy a home that you are truly happy with the way that it already is.
Not every woman wants a new kitchen every 5-10 years.

You are taking about your wife as if she is a child who doesn’t understand money.

You should have already discussed the budget before looking and she should know what the monthly payment will be.

You need to discuss what will happen if you buy the larger house. Will you budget more to furnish it, landscape it. Can you afford the larger heating, cooling and maintenance costs?

Also can you talk to her and determine what she loves about the home? If we’re treating your wife like a child, I’ll tell a story about my child. Sometimes my 7yr old wants a $100 Lego set because it contains a piece that is really special - I don’t buy a set for a piece. Sometimes he wants it because it’s a cool car or rocket he will play with - then we get it because he enjoys it so much and really uses it. Try to figure out what is making your wife love this house. Spend more of it’s a good reason - but not if it’s something like a nice paint color or a detail you can put in other homes for a minimal cost.

If you have to ask that question, you shouldn’t be married.

You say you can afford the bigger, more expensive house, but are financially conservative. Homes are generally appreciating assets. So if you buy a bigger house, it is still investing your money in a reasonable way.

You need to sit down and do the math on this home purchase *together* — what your savings and investments are, how much the house will cost, what you’ll have left over. She needs to see the numbers if you want to convince her to go with the less expensive option.

Have you figured closing costs in? Have you looked at and compared the taxes, HOA fees, schools, commutes, compared utility bills? Factored in $5+ per gallon gas? Which house will need renovations and how expensive will that be?

Could she be happy enough being house-poor? What if you can’t buy all the furniture all at once? Will she be willing to eat beans and rice — and will you? Will she be willing to forgo designer purses, shoes, travel, and household help like cleaners, if she has to? Those are personal decisions only the two of you can make.

Do your research, do the math, talk about all the issues together, and you’ll get your answer.
