Both our moms use canes, so we always give them the front seat. It’s just easier that way.

Seriously! Neither I nor my dh like his mom very much. But we are polite and make sure she is comfortable. When the kids were young and in car seats, she sat in the front seat bc it was most comfortable and she could turn around and see them. I sat in the third row. None of our car trips were very long (a ride to a restaurant) so it was hardly an issue. Now I still insist she ride in front bc she is older and it is easier for her. Mil has given me much aggravation over the years but I never thought about this an issue. If this is your only problem, you are fortunate.

OP—next time you insist on driving. See how it shakes out then.

Whoever is bigger gets the front seat; but they don’t get to be a jerk and push the seat all the way back so there’s no legroom in the back. If the Back seat is hard to get into, then whoever is younger and more flexible needs to flex their way in.

I always offer the front seat - to any guest we might be driving but especially to my MIL. I have no problem sitting in the back, and she would be more comfortable in the front.

I would always give the more desirable seat to an elder. I don't understand why this is a question. Yes, your husband's mother should sit up front by him in the car. It is the more desirable seat AND it means she can have a nicer conversation with him.

I truly don't understand this, OP. Why on earth would you deprive your husband of the opportunity to talk with his mom? That just doesn't make sense unless you're so controlling that you are not willing to risk letting him talk to his mom without you approving everything before he says it.

I would privately tell DH that you are going to drive.
