If she has a lot of demonstrated interest and can be full-pay, then she should apply ED to Davidson. Davidson gets a lot of applicants from DC area, so tougher to get in from here than it was when I attended 25 years ago. Bonus points if she is not a WASP, as Davidson has made a real effort over last 3 decades to expand the diversity of its student body. Second the recommendations to look at Sewanee, Wofford and Rhodes.

Washington and Lee is pretty much Davidson sans D1 athletics. W&L is a slightly higher ranked SLAC ( USNWR) but is a little less competitive in admissions versus Davidson. If the OP's DC is strong enough to be recruited at the D3 level, W&L might be worth a look.

Davidson has a lower acceptance rate.

Davidson's acceptance rate is marginally lower, but W&L's stats are stronger. Most recent same year common data sets have W&L Middle 50% SAT of 1350-1500 and ACT of 32-34 vs Davidson at 1310-1460 SAT and 30-33 ACT.

Is Davidson as conservative as Washington & Lee? And as full of old Southern families with lots of money?

I have one at Davidson and it isn't as conservative as W&L (we looked at both). The PP is right about it being a difficult job to find something similar. Unique characteristics: D1 sports in small community, niceness is especially valued (during the first visit home the first year, I heard "even the jerks are nice!"), easy climate, SLAC that is accessible (quick Uber to Charlotte/airport), subtle greek life.

Agree wholeheartedly. I have a kid at Davidson and character counts with their admissions office. They unofficially seem to have a no jerk policy. For insight into the admissions process at Davidson, read Jeff Selingo's Who Gets in and Why book. Davidson is one of the 3 schools in the book that granted him access to the admissions process.

There are quite a few schools that don't seem to have a "no jerk" policy, unfortunately. I don't know too many Davidson people, but the ones I do know are not, in fact, jerks.

While they're not easy admits, they are in fact, easier to get into than Davidson. Size is part of that, but it's just fact that the admit rates are higher. Why people suggest Elon to someone who wants something like Davidson is beyond me. From an academic perspective they are night and day. Elon does not attract the curious, intellectual types that Davidson does. It's a lovely school, but not for intellectuals.

It is better to look at stats (standardized scores, class rank, etc.) rather than admit rate as that will tell you what sort of stats you will need to present as an applicant. On a stats basis, I don't think W&M is lower than Davidson. Richmond is probably only marginally lower. The leg up at W&M would be applying in-state and ED. I saw W&L listed as well earlier and that would not be an easier candidate as well as it has marginally higher stats than Davidson (and I believe the highest SAT scores in the state of Virginia).

Back to the original question, there should be many candidates if you look at the schools on the USNWR National LAC list that are lower ranked. Schools like Rhodes and Sewanee come to mind.

Miami of Ohio is a state school with at least 15,000 students so not really like Davidson which is much smaller and a LAC.

I am aware that Miami of Ohio is larger, but the vibe on campus is very similar to Davidson and Miami gives significant merit aid to students.
