I would be a little worried if in math or reading. The kids I give 2s to are not doing well. -ES Teacher
Yes, also, it's a little different this year as kids are trying to catch up after distance learning last year. My 3rd grader typically gets 3s and 4s but has gotten 2 2's (both in writing) this year for the first time and it's because she basically did no writing in 2nd grade after learning about Google's dictation service and doing all of her writing online. She's got a LOT of catching up to do in writing. Her teacher flagged in Q1 and we got a tutor. A 2 should definitely warrant at least an email to the teacher.
Teachers do keep in mind distance learning from last year. Not all kids are behind or getting 2s.
Why didn't you help her with her writing so she wouldn't fall behind?
Anonymous wrote:My kids had a fair amount of 2s when they started ES, but they earned 3s and 4s by 6th grade, and then mostly As in MS and HS. 2s are basically indicating your child has not yet developed whatever skill is being measured, but they will usually get there by the end of the year.

Your child did distance learning last year? During the 2021-2022 school year? Interesting.

Really? My first grader has all 4s and a couple of 3s (in like PE). I just assumed pretty much all kids get 4s if they put in a decent effort. I didn't know 3s were the norm.
Anonymous wrote:Thank you for posting this! My DD got 4s pretty much across the board in academics but a few 2s in citizenship areas (self control, completing work on time). That's not a surprise to me because I have talked to the teacher about self-control and talk to my DD about it on an almost daily basis, but I don't know what beyond that I can do. I have always suspected she may have ADHD but the teacher seemed ambivalent on that. Not really sure what else do to.

2s are a suggestion to contact the teacher for support in core areas.
I also learned that repeated 2s are in some of the citizenship categories are a way a teacher might convey concerns about potential ADHD since they can't outright tell you that.
Why not? They aren't allowed to? or the school is concerned it would piss off the parents?

We aren’t allowed to. We aren’t medical professionals. We can’t diagnose.
