Why? At 45k it is cheaper than any of t20-t30 private school
For oos it's closer to 80k. Impacted majors and big classes.
My OOS kid received Regents scholarship and it covered about 95% of the expenses including transportation during thanksgiving and breaks. Of course it is very competitive and only about 20 are selected each year for OOS students.
Yes, Regent's scholarship is amazing. I am glad they offer them to out of state students.

UCLA alum here. UCLA is known all over the world. Out of the country, brand name is higher than Cal. And in the country...is there anyone who has heard of Cal that has not heard of UCLA?
Cal is ranked higher (I believe for historical reasons) but UCLA is harder to get into.
Go where you can get in, but...a quote from some other DCUMer that is worth repeating:
"No one has ever regretted going to UCLA."[/quo
oof tone deaf,pp! That poor UCLA woman who was murdered last week!
top PP here. My kids went to school with that woman; I didn't go to her memorial last weekend only because my DH was sick. That murder had nothing to do with UCLA. She's a local; even if she wasn't getting her advanced degree at UCLA, she might have been working at that store.
That doesn’t change the fact that LA is inundated with the homeless. Of course the SF area isn’t any better, probably worse.

Anonymous wrote:Berkeley is surrounded by crappy area. Kids there are cutthroat, esp in engineering and pre-med. Not a happy place.
UCLA maybe a little less academic prestige, but everyone is so happy and having so much fun that no one cares.

Nice try. UMD isn't in the same league as UVA or Michigan -- or UCLA or Berkeley.
Nice try. UVA isn’t in the same league at Berkeley either. Actually Cal is in a league of their own here , followed by Michigan and UCLA, then maybe UVA or UNC.
Nice try. Where did I say UVA was in the same league as Berkeley? All I said was that UMD is in the same league as any of these schools. And it isn't.
I agree that UVA is not in same league as Cal, UCLA, or Michigan. It is a tier up from UMD however. [/quote
USN& WR would disagree with you about UVA
THE and QS rankings say otherwise.

Better “brand recognition” than UCLA? No. They’re both equal in that department. UCLA is probably more recognizable.
Berkeley is definitely more respected academically and for research.
