I agree that OP is a busybody and crazy.
But, I'll feed the troll here. My guess is that they bought a second home somewhere that is either in the mountains, on a lake, or somewhere remote and the pickup is both a lot more common and more serviceable for where the second home is. Like other suggested, maybe he got a boat or something else that needs hauling, especially for a second home where it might be in storage nearby, so they have to go, pick up the boat, then go to the vacation home to put.

A few explanations - a truck is his mid life crisis car but since he isn’t sure he will like it, didn’t want to go too high end.
He moved it from his ranch/mountain house. You don’t want a fancy vehicle there or you stick out like a jerk

Or they are struggling financially and you picked up on the first sign. Just kidding. Highly unlikely they would save money this way. You don’t get much for a trade in. Trucks are still expensive and gas guzzlers.
