I've been suspecting sham tryouts for a while but everyone seems to think it's common practice. If you make the team in 5th Grade, chances are you'll remain unless you get bumped--which those boys all did. Why have tryouts at all? ???

I don't know anything about how McLean basketball works, but it sounds like some of the "A" players from last season were cut from the "A" team to make room for some of the new coach's AAU players. And the roster being smaller than last season--last year's A team players probably moved down to the B team. Which meant many of last year's B team kids lost their spots, most likely, since FCYBL said no league could have three teams this season.

Silver lining is the McLean B team will probably be much stronger than the other D2 teams...

My son plays on a team that has played the McLean B team several times over the past few years. What's strange is that the B team this year seems substantially weaker than the B team last year. So that makes no sense.

How do you know? Have you scrimmaged them? The season hasn't started yet... ?

So what I heard is that a CYA coach went around to different leagues this summer trying to find a league that would let him coach their first team and bring a group of AAU players in to play together on their first team to get access to the FCYBL games.

This must be that guy and McLean must have said yes. Since Concepcion wasn't an existing McLean parent, he didn't have any loyalty to the existing McLean families and saw that having a winning amazing team would be great for his side business of basketball training. OK, this is making sense now.

But wouldn't the A team kids that got cut go down to the B team? So the B team should be better than last year's B team?
It does make sense. It means the kids that got cut weren’t good enough to make the team. Plain and simple. Some parents have an inflated sense of their kid’s ability. Most of this thread is just sour grapes.

This was the email sent to select players from McLean basketball several months ago.

7th grade Mclean boys basketball players:

I am please to announce that Lex Concepcion has accepted the position as the A team coach for our 7th grade boys select basketball program. Lancer Martin has moved overseas and had to step down from this role. Lancer had arranged for Lex to provide training sessions for this age group in the past and was instrumental in introducing us to Lex whom he highly recommended. Lex played collegiately at Mary Washington, has coached at the high school and AAU level and currently trains players locally through the Pure Sweat training program. He will be a great asset to our select program.

Lex will be working with Tom Ball who coaches our other 7th grade boys select team to arrange for training sessions for the age group over the next month prior to the select team tryouts which are expected to be scheduled around October 1. Be on the lookout for communications from them

Thanks

Regards

Gerry Megas

Someone should send this link to whoever runs this league. Often the people at the top of the leagues have kids who are grown up and they have no idea what is happening.

FCPS Middle Schools don't have official basketball teams or basketball coaches. The guy is not an FCPS employee. He put together a team, called it the Middle School Team, and they played a few games so he could claim his kid was the Star of the Middle School Team.

LOL! It looks like their "season" was about two weeks long. What the heck.

Its just to build his kid's resume.

And those teams are going to be stacked. Fair or not, that’s life.

FCYBL isn't an elite league either. No one is claiming that it is. It's a step up from rec and the teams are meant to be local teams.

+1. It's supposed to be travel light; AAU teams taking slots eliminates the league as an option for kids who want something more than rec but not AAU.

It looks like he is the head coach for the AAU team but the assistant coach for the McLean Select team. Same guy in both photos.
