It is not the responsibility of first world nations to open their borders every time a person wants to flee crime and poverty from their home country. Countries need to fix themselves through effective governments and a well built economy. There are no laws whatsoever that require countries to offer asylum to people fleeing crime. If people want better opportunities to escape poverty and crime, they can apply with the UCIS just like everyone else. Just like my dad. Just like my wife.

Pffff, Chicago and Baltimore have murder rates on par with Iraq. Why aren't you screaming about offering children who grow up in those cities asylum from their own damn poverty?

This is not true. If it were we wouldn’t have a shortage of good foster homes for the kids born in this country. These are parents acting in sheer desperation afraid for their children’s lives. Imagine the desperation it would take for you to send your child to the US, unaccompanied, springing all of your life savings. If we approached this issue as the humanitarian crisis it is instead of treating these people like unwanted insects we might actually address the violence and poverty that had prompted parents to take this step.

Then maybe we should fix the immigration and refugee problem that leads to the children being unaccompanied so that their tax-paying, labor-providing parents come along, too. Seems like a win-win. In addition to not being terrible.

My children have dual citizenship. We are foreigners on visas living in Bethesda and pay all our taxes here. Most foreigners in this area are here LEGALLY and pay into the system. The next time you see a child with an accent in your children's school, don't assume they are undocumented.

Also, as someone who has had to jump through an incredible number of ridiculously complex and expensive hoops to stay legally in this country, I harbor no resentment whatsoever against innocent CHILDREN. They have fled gang violence and extreme poverty, I don't blame their parents either for doing their best to ensure a better future for them.

The USA has the means to welcome immigrants of all types. It has the space. It's true our MoCo public schools are burdened right now, but as someone involved in PTA efforts, I can tell you that the burden comes from domestic influx into certain specific areas of Montgomery County. Not foreign.

Under what world laws are countries supposed to open their borders to those fleeing crime and poverty? Newsflash: there's about 4 billion people in the world who'd fit that bill. So what, is the US a few countries in Europe, Australia, NZ, Canada, South Korea, Japan and a few other countries supposed to let in billions of people with no control? It is not the responsibility of first world nations to open their borders every time a person wants to flee crime and poverty from their home country. Countries need to fix themselves through effective governments and a well built economy. There are no laws whatsoever that require countries to offer asylum to people fleeing crime. If people want better opportunities to escape poverty and crime, they can apply with the UCIS just like everyone else. Just like my dad. Just like my wife.

Pffff, Chicago and Baltimore have murder rates on par with Iraq. Why aren't you screaming about offering children who grow up in those cities asylum from their own damn poverty?

DP.. there are a ton of programs in the US for low income kids. If they want to escape a war zone by crossing city lines, they can do so. We don't have redlining today.

If you going to equate the two situations, then that means these inner city kids should be sent across city lines on their own, and the county should pay for their services (which they already do in their current city).

How do you propose a child do this exactly? Can you clarify how you think a child living in Baltimore can up and move to Potomac or Silver Spring as an ‘unaccompanied minor’?

MCPS has 162,680 students. 1,200 unaccompanied minors is less than 1%. If there are no more seats it is hardly the fault of these kids.

Except thaat's in less than one year with no end in sight.. Multiply the problem by 10 years. Illegal immigration has been going on for decades in MoCo and it is already straining the county's resources. That's 1,200 more seats taxpayers have to pay for to educate foreign nationals from another country. Every dollar spent on another country's child is a dollar not spent on our own children.
