Totally disagree with your take on this, but you don't like ND, so of course you think the others are a "better brand." I know a ton of people who would chose ND over either of those schools.

The most important aspect of the application are the essays. There's a lot of good information in this video of Don Bishop, the VP of Enrollment. It's from 2016, but not much has changed in terms of his advice. We followed his suggestions here and son accepted REA. The most important thing is showing how you will fit into ND..what will you give and what will you get. The crucial section starts at 36:00.

This was really helpful. Thanks. When you say high stats, would you mind defining more? My kid can't figure out if he is a reach or a more of a target (understanding all schools at this level are a lottery).

I would add that ND has an amazing alumni network that is same level as the ivies.

There are more than 70 million Catholics in the US. That alone doesn't give them any more of an "affiliation" with ND than being Protestant give you an "affiliation" with Harvard. Catholics in the US are not a monolith, and you are a bigot.

NP. It is interesting to see the various perspectives of hating on ND. I have categorized them as follows:

1) Those who are anti-Catholic and liberal who would consider every other top 20 as elite -- but never ND.

2) Those who are Catholic (or not), applied, and were rejected. Admissions to this school is becoming more and more challenging, with many big donor legacies even getting rejected or deferred. Especially those who applied along with the ivies, thinking it might be a backup...it is highly possible some HYPS admits were rejected from ND.

3) The Georgetown boosters.

4) And then the roll of the mill DCUM haters in general...they love piling on the negativity at every opportunity.

As a Notre Dame graduate, I cannot begin to fathom why. I would have taken Univ of Chicago or Princeton over Notre Dame in a heartbeat. I didn’t get in to either but obviously did at ND.

Good question.

While ND is obviously not as selective as Princeton or Chicago -- few schools are -- the gap isn't nearly as large as it used to be. Our oldest got into ND after being deferred ED to UVA (in state). A decade later our youngest with a much better record wasn't even waitlisted. We also have a close relative at Brown who got rejected by ND.

ND isn't for everybody, as others have said, but it's for enough people for its admissions standards to have become astronomical. There's this constant refrain about its terrible location. Just imagine how selective it would be if it were located somewhere else.
