A few things have stopped me from being a sub (I'm not in DC but imagine it's the same everywhere): The onerous amount of paperwork required, including chasing down a college transcript even though I have 20 years of professional work experience, the professional references (gotta have three and one has to be my current employer--from who I would be taking vacation to sub) and honestly, the pay. I want to help, but my county pays virtually nothing for subs and although I would love to help, I would end up losing money and I can't afford it.

Before I even got a sub job, I'm out $40 for expedited college transcripts and $25 for fingerprinting.

Hahaha, I'm a classroom teacher and the tech doesn't work for ME, so not sure what they can do for a sub.

All the teachers who are going to call out tomorrow are not sick. I would love an IMPACT bump for people who take fewer than a certain number of days off each year. Or a small bonus. Not hurt other teachers but reward those who don’t miss much work. And just to be clear I wouldn’t get the bonus because I have a toddler who is always sick. But I think its a good idea.


I think it would be a lawsuit waiting to happen from those with chronic illnesses. DCPS already allows staff who don’t use any sick days to cash them out. I don’t think it’s fair to give money in exchange for not using something you are contractually allowed to use. If I don’t use my health plan, can I get money back for that? I rarely take days off. If I do it’s for the flu or a doctors appointment I couldn’t schedule on a day off.
