I would say something to MIL after I was able to discuss it without being angry, and explain that she overstepped in a major way. Then I’d get her a box for Christmas, as someone suggested.

Food items, including chocolates, are frequently shipped with a “Perishable” marking. If this was the case, I would be glad she opened it bc it could have been cheese or something that needed refrigeration. It still doesn’t justify her helping herself to your birthday chocolates but this may not be a big deal.
OP here. She 100% knew they were chocolates, and that leaving them in the box indoors was just fine. That wasn’t even the night we left, either. It was an afternoon that she was there and DH and I were at work. We don’t depart for our hotel check in until early afternoon today.

OP here. It is not See’s Candy. I wouldn’t be upset over something you can buy in an airport.

Or was it Enstroms? From Colorado? That toffee is from out of this world amazing.

Wherever the candy is from, it was so inappropriate for MIL to do this. I, too, would have been upset by this violation of privacy. Who opens someone else’s package? Please tell me that your husband lit into his mother for being so rude.
