Honestly, moving Fairlington won't change much. Remember when they moved the DP triangle including "millionaires row" from Henry to Drew? It didn't increase the capacity at Drew whatsoever. Only two families from that street ended up sending their children to Drew and I think a total of 5 families in the whole DP Triangle ended up going to Drew. The rest are in option schools and private schools. Fairlington doesn't want to go to Drew either and they will do what the DP triangle did and find ways out. I'm not saying any of this is right, it just is what it is. As long as there are option schools in Arlington and private schools for those with money, Drew's enrollment will be down and their FRL rate will be high.
That’s not in the first proposal but it really doesn’t matter. It’s more important to relieve overcrowding at Abingdon than fill Drew. If people move/opt out the problem is still solved

Except that Fairlington is on the table. That was just a first proposal map. Fairlington needs to be zoned to Drew. It’s the only neighborhood left that will have kids that can or will be forced to attend Drew.

Did y’all even look at the map? Fairlington stays whole and other PUs on 4 Mile Run go to Drew. I know it’s fun to dump on Fairlington at DCUM but seems irrelevant to the actual proposal.

Yeah, except there's like 10 kids in that DP triangle and 100+ in South Fairlington. It will make a big difference. I'm not disagreeing about private and option schools, but the relative sizes of those planning units is way different.

There is a large group of South Fairlington parents lobbying to stay at Abingdon. They won’t go quietly. It’s gonna be a battle.

The Gunston to TJ and Wakefield to WL maps look fairly non-controversial. Any thoughts on whether Abington to Drew will be a fight this time? Basically the plan is pitting Abington parents against one another.

I agree. We are the only one in our neighborhood attending Drew. We aren't in DP, but were zoned for Henry. Every neighbor kid is in an option school or private. So far our kid has had a good experience and I'm hopeful some of our neighbors go from private to Drew, but if the proposed plan is adopted I think many more will be driven to private

I just checked. The ArlNow commenter is right. No schools are under capacity right now except for Key, Claremont and MPSA. Some are bordering on full though, and will go up again as the pandemic eases.
I think it shows that how popular these optionsprograms are. It's not so easy to just reduce enrollment to the elementary immersion programs. You need students to matriculate to the middle and high school programs, and not enough students shuts down that pathway too. You also lose staff if there are not enough children in each grade, and Spanish Language Arts teachers will always be in short supply. You just can't find them off the streets.
I think the disparity also reflects the greater need for immersion students to be in-person and the infeasibility of them being able to continue in immersion via VLP. Montessori in-person would be similar in that Montessori advocates would feel that instructional model cannot be duplicated through the VLP either. Yes, there are waitlists; but most of the waitlist for immersion is from native English speakers.

What's more offensive is that despite the overcrowding issue and the population density, that a school building that could be a perfectly decent neighborhood school, is occupied by a option program, ..it just adds insult to injury.
I remember bussing kids past several schools was an argument to not fill Williamsburg middle school. But apparently that only apples to wealthier kids.

Doesn’t matter. Claremont and Campbell aren’t becoming neighborhood schools, and Carlin Springs and Barcroft don’t have space for more students. So you either will remain being bused to Abingdon, or be moved and bused to Drew instead. There isn’t anything unfair about that.

They can also just take fewer kids every year. They already started with the K class at Claremont and Key.
