Subject: Quarantining entire classrooms at ES level

When questioned about it our principal essentially said it was too hard to make that determination and the cautious approach is to send the whole class home. But I know of teachers in other districts (in the northeast, not trump country) whose schools have no policy executing the 3ft policy- kids whose desks or lunchroom seats are within 3ft are quarantined, not the entire class. I don’t know whether to make a thing about this or not, or who to even complain to. I otherwise like our principal but if the vaccine approval drags out this isn’t sustainable.
It's very good to hear that they're taking this so seriously.

Maybe they’re hoping parents will use common sense? Unlike the parents who brought their child to soccer this morning when I know their youngest’s class is quarantined because of a positive in their classroom.
Well according to mcps their older kid doesn’t need to quarantine and can attend school. So I can see why the parents think it is ok to bring their older child to soccer. I don’t agree dog this rule at all but I get why you’d think your older kid can continue life as normal if they are allowed back at school.
100% positive that the child who was participating in soccer was quarantined due to exposure in the classroom. It wasn’t a misinterpretation of the rule by the parent. It was willful ignoring.
Didn’t you say it was the sibling of the child who was playing in soccer that was in quarantine? If it’s a sibling that’s in quarantine then only that child needs to stay isolated, secondary contacts like their other siblings can attend school and sports. So this parent was not wrong to let their kid play soccer, assuming it was only their younger sibling asked to quarantine as a close contact.

I thought parents were supposed to use common sense. The soccer player was in MCPS quarantine as part of a class, not as a close contact. The parents' had no reason to think he was a legitimate close contact, and certainly had no reason to think he was infected. And if he was infected, he might not be infectious. And if he was infectious, soccer is presumably outside where transmissions would be rare anyway.
Common sense would dictate that child isn't a greater transmission risk to others on the team as many, many others others that the teammates would interact with on a daily basis.

Not quite. If your child is a true close contact, he or she should stay home for only seven days, assuming you get a negative test on day 5 or later. But since MCPS is quarantining everybody by default, you don't know that this is the case. I'm sure asymptomatic kids are outside doing sports.

Are you sure the whole class is in quarantine and not just close contacts? Our school recently had a positive case in a class but they only quarantined close contacts and not the entire class.
