What are the roles like for boys? My DS dances at another studio and we are happy there for now, but I'm curious how other studios handle boy roles for Nutcracker.

I don't know -- does anyone know whether older girls can be in that scene?

In previous years, no one past level 3 was cast as party, until they get to girlfriends and they are PTP. This is my best recollection... There is overlap if your kid is tall or short
PB3 mushroom, bumblebee
1A cherry blossom, mouse, snow angel, party
1B mouse, snow angel
2 soldier, party
3 soldier, bunny, doll, party, little clown
4A/B clown, little butterfly
5 butterfly, frontier

Long time TWSB nutcracker veteran, we've done mushroom, mouse, solider, party girl, and party was the best. Lots of time on stage, everyone recognizes you because they can see your face, pretty dress.

Thanks so much for sharing this!!

There are older girls on pointe in that scene that look about the same age as Clara. But Clara is always a PTP or company dancer. I think the roles you're talking about are all PTP.

Oh absolutely! My DD would LOVE to be a clown.

Same here, my Level 3 would be over the flipping moon to be a clown!

Do upper levels get a chance at the Party Girl scene or are all those roles from PTP?

The great thing is there's a huge variety in the different parts, so they can get a range of experiences and training and challenges over the years. The settings and costumes and dances are all so different. But most kids at any given level are probably really hoping for one particular role, so it feels like there's a lot at stake when they're waiting to hear.

Yeah that makes sense where the kids want to have a more individual role (though obviously a big part of ballet is dancing in an organized fashion with a group).
