Didn't they get a million bucks out of it? That is more than enough money to cover funeral expenses and tying up whatever his remaining financial obligations are.
Although I can appreciate that his family doesn't wish to appear that they are taking advantage of the situation, I think many more people would have contributed due to the horrifying way in which a decent, hardworking, elderly died and the callousness of those who killed him.

This is why I'd be ok with the 13 year old being tried as an adult. She made repeated, calculated decisions that led to the death of another human being. This wasn't some terrible one-time sudden mistake.
Sadly, I know she'll probably get a slap on the wrist at most.
Because this is the law. Whatever we are each OK with, the law dictates what a 13 year old can be charged with. What we should be demanding is that she be kept in the system until she is 21 or demonstrates maturity and reform. This man and his family deserve no less than this.

Given what we know about the earth’s population and climate change I think everyone should be on mandatory birth control (boys too), from the age of 9-21. If you want your birth control device removed you must pass a series of psychological and common sense tests (that are culturally sensitive to the region/ country/ village the citizen is in). DP - at first glance PP’s idea seems incredibly, horrifyingly dystopian, but... humans are an effing infestation on the planet at this point. There are too many GD people already, so I don’t think it’s worth outrage at the thought of some barriers to reproduction being implemented to try to keep the absolute dregs from reproducing...
I actually wish there was a safe, effective birth control for both boys and girls that would start around age 10 and would have to be disabled by an active decision. And I wish that this birth control would be standard of care universally--not just for certain groups--kind of like the HPV shots. But for now this idea is a pipe dream.
Part of the problem in many poorer areas is there's abundant birth control and everyone knows about it, but the girls see few prospects for themselves and want to get pregnant. Sad but true.

I found the jump to eugenics on this thread weird and unhelpful. Sinister, too, but let's focus on unhelpful.
The issue to me seems to be about the logical limits of rehabilitation hopes for repeat offenders and how that can be better handled for juvenile offenders to keep the public safe. From this perspective, blaming everyone except the perpetrators seems like a really dangerous thing, and failing to take away their opportunity to kill again is shifting a risk onto the public that I don't think should be forced on us.
