Oh I do! Ask any college counselor. Most parents in Virginia would love to have their child go to UVA but counselors find themselves saying “well Larla doesn’t have a 4.47 or a 34+ GPA so there is little chance of getting in, let’s look at some other likelys “. UVA is small compared to
other flagships, so fewer in-state students are admitted which adds to the problem. We knew there was no chance DD would get in, but it’s annoying to some that they will be counseled not to bother even sending in an application. Then there are those parents whose child applied but either were waitlisted or flat out rejected. For those lucky few who do get in, UVA is a financial windfall. That drives parents crazy -hence the ignorant but vitriolic comments here and on this site.

PP who said nobody really gives a rat's a** about the nuances of public flagships is correct. Even further, who in the world do you think cares if you have a computer science degree from Berkeley over...SJSU? Nobody. Both kids get the same exact offers.

Even with Ivies, a very tiny subset of people comprehend what it takes to get admitted into one.

UVA kids might have more presence on Wall Street is because it's full of arrogant but well-mannered, rich, attractive, and connected WASPy frat boys and sorority girls. Just like Michigan is full of affluent Jewish kids from NY/NJ who have family Wall Street connections...so surprise, surprise, a lot of UMich kids end up at banks. These huge public schools are not molding random kids, they're just giving kids who were already destined for these tracks a degree.

I admit I come from a long line of private school alumni, but everyone I know considers UVA to be an elite public, and strong alternate to the best of the privates. This is at a level that few but the best privates can compete (ie Berkley, UCLA, and a select few others). Any assertion that UVA is just another public is based in ignorance.

I disagree. I am an alum and I have found that outside of the DMV, the UVA name has very little cache. Certainly we are nothing compared to UCLA or even, dare I say it, Michigan or UNC. I am proud of my affiliation with the UVA but I'm not gonna lie...most people outside of the DMV think we're like any other state school in the country. We could be UMiss for all they care.

The word is cachet and you are not an alumnus.

They are, but for many majors, it's splitting hairs. In my Northeast HS, UVA was considered top notch and an accomplishment to get in.

maybe it depends on the field. In finance, I think UVA has more weight than most other publics and a pretty strong alumni network. I have no clue about other fields though

It is a really strange cohort on DCUM that injects UVA into every discussion.

I think the source is that they are building it up in their minds to justify the lower cost. They need it to be as good as higher cost options, otherwise they are a cheap, bad parent.
