There are wait lists, you have to be nominated/sponsored by a member at a few of these mentioned .... and there has been in the past a very Skull-n-Bones secrecy surrounding who is allowed in and who is not.
If you were in "skull and Bones, ( must leave whenever "skull" is used {members of this secet society have never seen Macbeth in its entirety); Porcellian (must retire for a year and meditate, which probably never happens as how many times in the course of normal conversation have you ever heard anyone say "Porcellian?; Cap and Gown or Tiger -- the only Ivy League without a Law School (could some of the others follow this example?)--I don't know, but, considering how often "Tiger" has been said since November 2009, one can only hope it isn't too drastic.
If one is a member of any of the above they're already 3rd or 4th generation legacy. I recommend the Mint Juleps at Chevy Chase.

Which country clubs would qualify at the "Big Three," to borrow DCUM language.
Congressional Country Club, Columbia Country Club, and Woodmont maybe in Moco.

HOWEVER - I expect what you are seeing is that the folks from a particular club already know each other, and that is why they are standing out to you. It will be less obvious as everyone else gets a chance to meet each other.
Is Chevy Chase all or mostly Catholic?

This has to be a record for longest (chronological) thread on DCUM?

It used to be the WASP club and Columbia was for the Catholics but more and more Catholics are joining Chevy.
