There have been huge crowds outside our school every morning of kids trying to beat the line. They aren't letting them in.
That seems like an individual school issue — ours opens at 7:30 and has four entrances. The line was very long yesterday but moved really quickly. My daughter texted me before going in this morning and said it was even better today.
Which school?
I find it interesting that the people posting about how the detectors are no problem at all will never identify the alleged school their alleged kids allegedly attend.

THEY DON'T PREVENT SCHOOL SHOOTINGS. Especially as implemented by FCPS. There is no way to 100% secure a large suburban public school from school shootings. Someone could drive by and mow down the hundreds of kids standing outside. For one instance.

Actually these won’t help. Most school shootings are planned in advance and they come with a large rifle during the school day. Consistent locked doors and a strong community where students speak up when they see a problem are the best security.
Yup-it's sad but true. And now we have kids standing outside of buildings-teachers and counselors who are not trained and probably annoyed about their planning time being taken away all for what. Parents want safety not theater.

The kids waiting outside the school are outside the detectors. At some schools, you can be off campus on public property and reach kids waiting in line.

The detectors and supervision in the halls/bathroom areas help address vaping, fighting, bullying, assaults, and more. FCPS could also ask for parent volunteers. Speak for yourself. I and many other parents think this is a performance on par with what Trump is currently doing downtown. The kids aren't safer. There are still plenty of ways for an enterprising student to get a weapon in -- none of the items being put to the side (water bottles, three-ring binders) are getting secondary screening -- and we're increasing the danger by assembling a large group of sitting ducks daily. This is money taken from actual education and spent instead on creating a false sense of security. So, no, I am not thankful.

Second, I'm so sorry your school has a bad weapons problem. That must be hard. Moving is always an option. But the families in the schools that don't have that problem don't want this.
School shootings happen in all types of schools, including public and private in nice, wealthy areas. You don’t know when it could happen at your school. These detectors are necessary, long overdue, and can save lives. Stop complaining. Maybe YOU should move.
Actually these won’t help. Most school shootings are planned in advance and they come with a large rifle during the school day. Consistent locked doors and a strong community where students speak up when they see a problem are the best security.
