Anyone surprised he has not married her? Bet she was hoping.

After au pairing in the US for two years, she wouldn't be able to extend her J-1 visa as an au pair.
Either her mom misunderstood, or she was applying to switch her visa status from J-1 to F-1 as a student. An F-1 visa would have allowed her to stay in the US legally and go to school. It's really hard for au pairs to do this, though, because they have to have a sponsor, who agrees to pay the tuition for all four years. The sponsor has to actually show proof of funds and sign an affidavit promising to pay even if the student quits school. Plus, under a student visa, she wouldn't legally be able to work, so she'd have to show that she has a means of supporting herself without working.
If she is trying to get an F-1 student visa, either she has a rich relative or BB is sponsoring her. In the case of the latter, immigration official often frown upon host families sponsoring their former au pairs, because it suggests that the student is still going to be working for the host family as a childcare provider, which is prohibited under visa rules.
It's rare for an au pair to successfully switch from J-1 to F-1. Most of the time they just stay in the US illegally or get married.
Super interesting. Thanks for all of this info.
Suspect she lied to her mom about the visa. She may have been counting on him marrying her.
Anyone know if she was enrolled in school? It's already almost November and her visa is basically up. Assume Fairfax will hold and not deport? She could really enhance their case about Banfield if she ever tells the truth.
Must have been a bit stressful in Herndon as of late. May that work in favor of justice.

This does say he was not known to her.
I am definitely not well versed in these details so maybe I’m missing something but my theory is BB stabbed her, lured Joe over and manipulated AP into thinking he was an intruder which resulted in her shooting him… 23 is so, so young and someone who is an au pair is not typically a criminal mastermind but definitely easily manipulated for love. I wonder how much of this she was even aware of outside of thinking she loves him, this was all an unfortunate accident and they are protecting each other. Now they want her to turn on him.
You can watch the actual LE press conference, linked in thread.
She told her mom
Souza also claimed that Magalhaes had told her that the case had been closed around three months ago—and that Christine Banfield and Ryan had previously been in a relationship.
First of all, obviously not closed, since she is now locked up, and the second part is a bit more complicated, perhaps.
This girl is likely not the innocent waif you would like to think. She and Brendan both lied about him being the shooter of Joe and there being a home invasion, which LE said was false as early as the day of the killings. She has lied about a lot of things. She may have thought Brendan would marry her. The timeline that morning was so tight, just don't see how it wasn't premeditated. Her involvement and knowledge may come out in more detail, or she may flip, provide evidence and plea, so we may never know.
How would she have access to a gun? Wouldn't she let the LE officer right there handle Joe? Why did she not call 911 first? Why was her focus not on protecting the child and staying out of the house if her concern had a basis?

If you listen to the law enforcement press conference, in its entirety, they don’t exactly say he was unknown. They just say so far the investigating has shown he has only known to Christine. That doesn’t mean he is not known to the others. It’s a very interesting choice of words using per the investigation…

Her daughter also told her the case was closed 3 months ago.
In her telling, Juliana is a hero, not a killer.
She mentions her "arriving for work" but in the People article she had said she and the child had been out.
I don't get the "arriving for work" thing in the article b/c she lived there! Also, she said the kid was with her. Maybe it was something lost in translation.
No you can’t read. They arrested her last week when she was arriving to work. She has another job.

? I think you are mistaken. I believe they arrested her last week at BB’s house, which leads me to conclude she was still living there as his Au pair. If she’s on a J-1 visa she’s not allowed to have “another job” and still live at BB’s house.

Actually I can read, and at least I’m not a d1ck.
“ Souza says Magalhaes was arriving for work when she saw a man entering the house and, feeling scared, called Brendan Banfield to tell him about the break-in. Magalhaes and Brendan Banfield then entered the property and found Christine wounded.”
