NP - Use your vocabulary Jeff... the definition is an accurate description of the person who behaves in this way.

It's not my vocabulary that is the issue. But rather the vocabulary of you folks who seem to get stuck on one word.

What term is acceptable to describe a person who brings a weapon out at night, hunts down a defenseless kid and kicks them in the head nearly to a coma? What word would you like to use?

There are plenty of options. Assailant, aggressor, the individual charged as an adult in this incident, one of the students alleged to have attacked other students, the sole student arrested who has been identified, one of the attackers, I could go on and on.

None of those words convey the emotion that parents feel after that incident. It has nothing to do with racism. It has to do with the rage parents feel watching the safe neighborhood we moved to turn into an unsafe place where your children can't go meet up with their friends. You'll notice people were no where near as upset about the qo fight that was posted. Why? Because throwing punches in a school hallway isn't something new. The emotion behind the Bethesda incident is because it was an abhorrent, cruel act outside the bounds of what is expected for our teens to deal with.
I'm haunted by the story of a group of teen/young adults in Canada who kicked a kid in the head like that outside a night club. They kicked his teeth out of head and killed him. Calling them "assailants" doesn't cover it. It was an animalistic, disgusting act of brutality.

What’s the problem?

You need to slow your roll on Mr. Steele. The level of open discussion allowed on this website is unbelievable for the current year. As we have seen, website is under surveillance by Brookings and other lefty NGOs for racial wrongthink, and allowing 39 pages of discussion of something the great and the good would prefer to have swept under the rug is an act of extreme principle in the current environment. Guy is a mensch. (Thats the reason I put up with the video ads. Lol)

As for “The T Word”, it matters little. That which we call a rose/by any other name would smell as sweet. It is objectively true that this word has become racially coded, and some find that unappealing. You see it in the increasingly evasive headlines about urban crime, with all the references to joggers, motorists, pedestrians, scholars, honor students etc. The sad truth is that demographic realities of crime in DC will make any forthright references to criminals become racially coded over time, and some will then object to that formulation on grounds that aren’t entirely unreasonable. We’re all just on the euphemism treadmill. It’s a small point.

The more disturbing abuse of language in this thread is the description “fight” applied to Clockwork Orange-style ultra violence that creates great risk of extreme bodily harm. This is a new and disturbing phenomenon, certainly in Bethesda, and the shameful attempt to sweep this under the run with “teens will be teens”—another T word we might lose soon in this context—is immoral and dangerous. Taking the people who commit acts like this off the street for a good long time is the only way we can have a civilized society, and nobody, not least the self-righteous soft-on-crime squishes, is going to like the world that emerges if something is not done, and soon.

I agree with all this. This was not a fight and it’s insulting to the victims and their families to label it that. I don’t like the t— word either because it’s a dog whistle word but it’s important to say that this conduct was outside the norms of teens behaving badly. I might use the term “deeply troubled and violent teen” which feels accurate here. I wish I was more optimistic that there was a rehabilitation or medical avenue that would turn this kid’s life around. As a society, I don’t think we have good options for dealing with people with this level of violence in them. I feel sad for the mom of the assailant as well as the parents of the victim and the victims themselves.

You are living in a bubble if you think Bethesda has always been and will be "safe."

This is probably something better suited for your therapist than DCUM. It is probably a good idea to take some of the emotion out of it here. At any rate, no need to argue about it. I've clearly stated my position on this.

It's funny because banning words is banning thought and when you do that, it has the exact opposite effect than what the banner had in mind.
The far right has been completely taken aback and outraged by the thought police for a while.
Now they're coming for the moderates. It will drive them away and against the Uber progressives, too.

*you people* lmao
Hearing you people complain that you can't say "thug" sounds a lot like hearing racists complain that they can't say the n-word. I am fairly certain that is not a coincidence.
