I'm 51. An overwhelming majority of my friends in this area got married in their early 30s and had kids between 35-40. Interestingly, the only 2 who got married and had kids in their 20s went to college in the South. I think 30s is the ideal time to start having kids.

+1

I’m in my 50s and this is true for most of my college and DC friends. And successful HS friends.

I had my first kid at 30 and I was the "young one" at work and in my prenatal yoga class. I was also the first person in my friend group to have a baby.

Do you actually know any single and childless women over 40? Because I do, and they're doing fine.

lol. You want them to admit that they did it all wrong and they are lonely and miserable?

+1. They’re almost always closet drunks, pill poppers, and being exploited by shrinks. And obsessed with their dogs or cats, of course.

They all wanted to have the SATC lifestyle and didn’t realize till they were too old what they missed out on.

You're obsessed with this silly notion that women planned their lives around a TV show.

I know plenty of single childless women in their 40s who did. And now they regret it.

You are mental, Brunch Granny.

No one planned their lives around SATC.

Sure they are. They love coming back to their empty and lonely apartment or home on a daily basis, no partner to do anything with or take trips with, no children to brighten and liven up their life. Just an endless supply of designer clothes and shoes to wear for girls nights.

This is dumb. If they want a child, they can adopt. There are so many children looking for a loving home.

I think a lot of younger women also notice that everything falls on the woman who also has a career. They see it as all too much-want to do things for themselves and not worry about 2-4 other people. You can't blame them. Also the world since about 10 years ago...continues to get worse.

Have you read the Relationship forum? Everybody in there would kill to have a house to themselves.

If pp thinks coming home from work and trying to get kids teady to go to sleep every night would ‘brighten and liven’ up someone’s life they are delusional. I love my three kids under 8 but it’s exhausting and frankly grueling work especially when you don’t have enough sick leave or maternity leave, people openly resent you on planes and in restaurants despite welcoming pets (guess it’s all that liveliness), boomers are generally too busy living their best life to help out with their grandkids, and you can’t guarantee your kids will have a better life than you did so you work like heck to try and give them a leg up.

This is not my experience.

I will say, I do find them to be set in their ways and not able to handle chaos very well but I get it.

I don’t understand the PPs that insist on judging women who are walking a different path than you.

For what it’s worth, I am married with 3 kids.

I’m fifty and did want very much to marry and have children, but it didn’t happen for me. I’m not miserable or lonely. I’m very content.

Your comment about chaos is definitely true of me. I think women like me lean into the peaceful aspect of our lives. You used the word “content” to describe the single women you know, and I used it to describe myself. It is a life of contentment and peace, and I think we become very protective of it, which is why we are “set in our ways”.

I'm a mom of 2 who I love but in another world I wouldn't want to be. Life is hard and having kids is another added level of anxiety and hard. Because it is the hardest job.

I don't think our species needs more kids. We have enough people. At 1B it would be enough!

Let's assume for a moment that you're right. Women who are single and don't have kids are miserable. Why does that bother you? I presume you did it all right and got married and had kids. Why not just enjoy the results of your correct choices? Why does it upset you if some women made poor choices and are unhappy?

This all assumes that having children guarantees a life that is also not lonely or miserable for the parents. Have you seen the Adult Children forum?
