My grandparents arrived here penniless, as teenagers, and in ONE generation, my parents were middle class as young adults, and upper-middle class by their 40s.

Surely you understand the difference between your grandparents (who likely arrived here in the '40s or '50s) and the opportunities they had compared to the average black person's grandparents and the opportunities they were shut out from until the late '60s and '70s? I grew up in the Midwest (Michigan, so not a former slave state), and there was a country club near me that didn't integrate until the '90s. Until then black members were openly excluded. Now ask yourself why your grandparents and parents might have had a somewhat easier time amassing resources than a black American might have had.

Huh? You think Asian-Americans are hostile toward African-Americans? (I'm not Asian BTW.) If I had to guess, I could imagine that they are resentful that blacks get into the top colleges they wanted, and with lower grades and scores. I think the resentment is understandable (if it exists).

Also, are you the PP who said that Affirmative Action policies were made to "correct" the legacy of slavery and Jim Crow? You almost make it sound as if it is a form of reparation, and that it should continue indefinitely. AA policies, which took root under JFK, were not developed specifically to help "make up" for slavery. They were meant to prohibit employers from discriminating based on color, race, and ethnic origin.

So in other words, it was intended for a situation where you have an equally (or even superior) qualified black candidate, and you choose the white one regardless. You discriminated based on race, and favored the white guy. Nowhere did it say you have to hire the black guy even if the white guy is better qualified. But that's what it's evolved into. A policy that was originally designed to prohibit "color considerations" has now been turned around to instead consider color, but to put the advantage to the black person instead of the white.

I'm one of several posters arguing for race-blind admissions, with points going to overcoming financial hardship. Blacks would still gain from the policy - and disproprtionately so, since they are disproprtionately from poorer backgrounds.
