Not if they're not capable of a successful career. I don't believe that SAHMs just want a job, but I think they're jealous of my value and success in the working world.

idk, I quit my job, became a SAHM and used my extra time to write a book which made the NYT best sellers list. Would not have done that if not for being a SAHM. Guess it depends on your meaning of success.


but you were working, what, 10 to 12 hours a week?

I definitely have a choice. I am sometimes jealous. I sometimes feel stretched too thin, but other times feel excited and proud of my work. My husband is proud of my work. I think most women feel like me: ambivalent but leaning one direction.

If this is true, then my opinion that's in the strong minority is that I definitely DON'T want to be a SAHM. Ever. I love having my life outside my home life. I think maybe part time would be nice, just so I wouldn't be stretched so thin. But I have no interest in giving up my work. And I'm not even that gung ho about my job and ambitious about my "career." I just like having a self-defined identity for some/much of my day. I'm sure some of you out there are wondering "why did you have kids then?" The answer is that (1) I love my kids and love spending the time I do spend with them, and (2) you would never think the same of a man.


+1 This is me too! I felt so at loose ends when I was at home on maternity leave, two times. I have never been happier and our family calmer and more on a stable routine than when I went back to work. And I am not really "career-y" either and my job is really just a job, not a career. But I love going to it, love being around adults, love the self-identity of being a WOHM, and love the role model I am being for my two daughters. Ditto to your last two sentences as well. Ditto 100x.

Unless you were drafted into the military, I'm not sure who all the idolatry regarding those in the military. You chose the job, it has benefits. You knew what you were doing. Cops, firemen, ER docs, so many people put their lives in danger. Sorry I don't get it.

I too am tired of the SN Trump Card. Those people in wheelchairs who want to be able to go to the movies, sit in the spots for wheelchairs, and have their companions or parents sit next to them--what assholes! I like to sit in those spots because I like to be that precise distance from the screen and have space to store my bag in the wheelchair spot.

Parents of kids with autism who bring them to family-friendly restaurants and playgrounds even though the kids might flail their arms around or make unusual sounds--how annoying! I prefer to not have my field of vision polluted by people acting atypical.

Those kids who have a hard time in school so their parents get them tested to see if they have learning disabilities--I don't like this either! When I was growing up, kids who didn't do well in school just flunked out. Why do today's kids deserve any better?

I don't think thats what PP meant by "SN"…more the ones with kids that are actually fine but just bratty.Serioulsy I know at least 10 kids with "sensory" issues. WTF? THere is no way that many kids have some all encompassing diagnoses.

I'll bite. I'm against abortion in first-world countries where there is access to birth control and I'm against the death penalty. I think that people that are for abortion and against the death penalty are, for the most part, people who go along with the popular opinion without thinking too deeply about it. How on earth are you fine with destroying innocent life, whether you believe it to be a baby yet or not, and yet be opposed to killing a violent criminal? I do see ways to reconcile the views, but I don't think most people do so.

I'm not saying all animal rescue groups are shady, but the ones in our neighborhood leave a lot to be desired. We bought a house that was owned by folks who ran a rescue - our understanding based on convos with neighbors is that they were basically forced out by the county for poor conditions, such as 17 animals in crates in the garage in 100 decree weather. And letting the animals out back to shit and not cleaning up after them to the point where our neighbors behind us couldn't ever use their pool.

And the crazy cat lady who yelled at me losing a cat she had already lost. It's not like I can bring a stray in when I already have 2 animals and kids. I had no way of knowing if the cat was ill. It's her own damn fault for letting the cat wander outside.

+1000. And I'm not talking about in a DCUM way. I'm talking about a food/clothing/shelter way. Especially people who keep having kid after kid because their religion doesn't believe in birth control. But it's ok to rely on handouts and their belief that God will provide for their family. God doesn't provide for your family--taxpayers do.
